Possible to make laptop prioritize to wired connection when present?

Hi,

There are times when I need to transfer large files over my network from my laptop to my desktop. I figured when I need to do this, I could just plug in the wired Cat5 cable to connect at 100Mbps vs the optimisticly rated 54Mbps connection of the wireless. However, I've noticed that even when I plug in the cable, it is still transfering the files over the wireless connection.

Without disabling the wireless, is there any way I can tranfer the files through the wired connection? I am currently using Windows Explorer to cut/paste the files, but I'd be open to using another application if it can work without having to disable the wireless.

You can choose the default by changing the TCP/IP stack Metrics.

Lowest number would be the default.

1. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections.
2. Right-click a network interface, and then click Properties.
3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
4. On the General tab, click Advanced.
5. To specify a metric, on the IP Settings tab, click to clear the Automatic metric check box, and then enter the metric that you want in the Interface Metric field.

Put 10 for the one that you would like to be the default and 20 in the other.

Look like this. http://www.ezlan.net/network/metrics.jpg

So, put metrics of 10 to the Wired TCP/IP stack, and 20 to the Wireless.

As long as the Wired is unplug the Wireless would work, once you plug the Wire it would swtich to the Wired connection.

Thank you. Worked like a charm. Out of curiosity, why 10 and 20 and not 1 and 2? Is that standard? Would either work?

For practical purpose on home computer, 1 and 2 would work too.

The lower number would be the defualt.
