Possible to make a gaming system for sub $1000?

First off I'm Canadian so I can't use newegg, or atleast they didn't when I checked them out a few years back, however there is places here that are rather close in terms of their pricing so it's a decent guideline.

Secondly I have not really looked into hardware for quite a while now, and it seems things have changed, I stopped roughly when conroe came out to give you an idea so obviously I missed a lot. However it still seems AMD is quite behind so I guess intel is the way to go?

1. I spend a lot of my free time online and while I occassionally try new games I spend most of my time playing MMO's, Everquest in particular which is not a graphically intensive game I would think.

2. I have a monitor at the moment so that cuts out a good chunk, and some HD's if I had to, but I'd like to keep it around $1000 or less.

3. Canada

4. Intel is fine, I have no idea how the video cards are now I'd go either way, as for HD's I've always preferred Seagate.

5. I just plan to keep the monitor, most of the parts are quite old.

6. I read though some, and the suggestion stickies so I have a few parts picked out, but don't know if it's a good combo or not and am unsure on some things.

7. I'd probably run it at default then OC when I needed it or it was a bit behind the times.

8. Within the next few months, probably 1-2 actually.

Well now that is out of the way onto the parts I guess.

CPU : Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor $100 or so

MOBO : GIGABYTE GA-EP43-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard $105

RAM : mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 $150

Case: I don't care too much and was hoping the Antec Sonata 3 was a good call, has a decent psu etc, is this or is this not an acceptable case?

GPU : Again not sure on this, I'd like to keep it under $200 which seems to be a x4850 or so, which is the best card in that range or lower?

HDD : SEAGATE 500GB Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II w/ NCQ, 32MB Cache x 2 $140

OS : I guess I need this, where can you pick up vista for cheap? I've got some copies of xp, but well I may as well get with the times.

Also just to give an idea I'm using an a64 3000+, 1gig ram, x850xt pe, with about 500gig in hd space over 3 drives. So while these may be cheap parts they are incredibly better than what I have, right? So they should be more than adequate I hope.

Adding this up with the sonata case I get it at a little over $800, however I know I am forgetting something other than the obvious dvd drive etc. So does it look like this would make a suitable gaming machine for mostly a 10 year old mmo, which is quite the system hog? I tend to play 2 accounts at once, which is a real strain on my current computer, so this is one reason for the upgrade. And I can upgrade the cpu/ram/video card with this setup for at least a while right?

Anyhow, thanks for any help you can give. I'd really appreciate it.

I recommend in this order: x48, x38, p45, p35, p43, all other/older intels, etc... 790i, 780i, 680i, 750i (if you have to have sli) - you can get a p35 and p45 ds3L.

RAM : mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 $150

good as long as you get 1066 in two dimms instead of four.

All from Newegg.ca. Doesn't include OS or aftermarket HSF.

Should run 2 EQ accounts just fine. No matter what, the non-selected EQ window will stutter. I see that with one running, and not being the primary window as is. (Yeah, I play EQ too).

Syran's build is solid, although I wouldn't personally go for the Nine Hundred. The one thing I would definitely change is the video card. The 4850 represents a great value - unless you're sure that the only game you're going to play for years is EQ, I'd go a notch higher than the 3870. Jaredpace would have you overspending for what you're doing.

Sorry, I had to go before I could finish off. Personally, I like the Thermaltake Armor cases, but they kinda blow the budget; esp for the full tower, with lots of room.
Also, I like the 3870 here for $110 vs the 4850 for $190 or so in Canada. I feel for what you are doing, the $80 saved is probably better off personally. Course that's just my 2cp.

Also, I like seagate HDDs, but the new 7200RPM 640GB WDs seem to really rock. They are super quiet, and pull in old school raptor 10k rpm speeds. Hence my choice over the seagates in yours.

Also, I like going with a separate PSU vs anything that's stock with a case, unless it's a really nice combo. Corsair has been putting out some superb PSUs lately. I esp like their modular stuff, but it adds to the cost.

Jaredpace is recommending RAID-0 on a lower-performing hard drive instead of recommending a faster reasonably priced desktop drive, I think that and not noticing the overpriced RAM puts his recommendations into perspective.

Syran's list of parts is very well chosen, the only thing I'd change is that if you're just playing EQ a lot and not on a massive*huge resolution monitor, getting the Radeon 4670 for $70 could be a much better choice.

HD 4850 can be found for $150 Cdn on Ncix after rebate. You could have two of those and still fit the $1000 budget. If your just playing everquest for now it might be wiser to just buy one videocard, at least for now.

If you don't care about the case you could save ~$40 and get for example an arctic cooling centurion 5. It has an 80mm intake, 120mm exhaust, tool-less installation, and mesh breathable front panel.

You mention you have a monitor, but if it's 17" or 19" you may consider upgrading to a 22" for under $200, will make your games look better (1680x1050 resolution) and if EQ is like WoW it would be good for placing more UI buttons and such. That'd put you just under $1000

Also, since your not buying for another month or two it will all be cheaper then, so you could probably upgrade the processor (E8400) or hard drive (1Tb) or just pocket the cash.

I didn't notice that the OP wasn't buying for a month or two. What you say is very true, that video card prices will probably be even a little bit lower by then, which may influence the decision.

I think you're referring to the Cooler Master Centurion 5, not Arctic Cooling. I don't think there's any reason at all for two video cards in this PC.

Thanks for the responses, spent a little time going over things and changed a few options. As is though I'd rather just use a local shop, they are a bit more on certain parts, lower on others but for dirt cheap they'll toss it together with a warranty as I hate the hassle of fixing everything myself.

ANTEC Sonata III Quiet Super Mini Tower w/ EarthWatts 500W, eSATA $109.95

Intel Pentium® Dual-Core Processor E2160 1.80 GHz w/ 1MB Cache $79.95

Asus P5Q w/ DualDDR2 1200, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, 1394, PCI-E 2.0 x16 $139.95

Corsair 4GB XMS2-6400 TWIN2X Dual Channel DDR2 Kit (2 x 2GB) $109.95

Western Digital 640GB Caviar SE16 7200rpm SATA II w/ 16MB Cache $79.95

LG Super Multi Security DVD Writer 22x, SATA, Black (OEM) $27.99

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic x64 (64-bit) DVD w/ SP1, OEM, 1-Pack $99.99

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4850 512MB PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDTV-Out $199.99

total $848

Now I'd like to use that case still, it doesn't look bad and with the PSU it comes with I don't think there is any real problems there. The processor was suggested as one that can OC quite well, and to be honest I might give that a shot sometime. As for most of the rest it looks to be in line with what was suggested, I picked up one of those HD's just to swap over a lot of my other files and so far it seems fast and is really quiet, so I think I'll stick with them. As for the video card, it looks decent, and should last a while, and to be honest with a newer comp I might give some other games a try, Fallout 3 is one that I will probably play in the near future at the very least.

Anyhow does anyone see any real problems with this setup? To be honest I could go and grab it right now with taxes and assembly for under $1k, so it looks tempting. I could spend quite a bit more, but I'd rather just go cheap and if I find that something such as the processor is a bottle neck I can swap it out, but as is it's much better than what I have.

Anyhow, thanks again everyone.

If you're going to overclock it you should ask that they put it together with an aftermarket cooler like the Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7.

I can do that for about the same price, other than the case I can't find that exact one, for a little over the price you have. However I'd want to knock the video card down a notch as it's plenty for what I plan to play in the short term. Actually it's the video card that knocks the price up over what your setup is.

And would it be worth it to just grab that processor over a cheaper one and trying to OC or just putting up with it? It's not that much more and seems quite a bit better than what I have been looking at.

Wolfdale is a much better processor in games over 20% clock for clock. Plus with the combo it's free upgrade over E2160. Wolfdale is the best core intel makes and clocks high.

As far as video card- you're choice- but i am trying to give you a little more future proofing and resale value. 4870 is elite card 4850 is not.

Whatever you decide you need to maximize combo deals and instant rebates for a huge discount.

Here is the case http://www.newegg.ca/Product/P...x?Item=N82E16811119047

All you have to do is put the item numbers I listed that start with N in neweggs search engine.
