thinking of getting me a new notebook but i hate Vista and i've had tons of trouble installing XP on notebooks that come with Vista pre-installed so i'd like to know what brands have better driver support for xp...

thx 🙂

also, does anyone know if newegg does downgrades?

thanks

Alex

Have you gone to the Acer website to look for drivers?

You might be better off getting a Dell Small Business model with XP pre-installed

Newegg doesn't build their own systems; they're just a reseller. Whatever the factory loads into the laptop (hardware and software) is what you buy from Newegg. So no; you won't be able to get this laptop w/XP from Newegg.

BTW; that's a really nice laptop for that price!!! :Q Three years ago I bought my Acer laptop from Newegg. 1.4GHz single-core AMD Turion, 512MB RAM, 100GB 5400rpm HD and ATI X700 graphics. Decent system, circa 2005. Oh yeah, I paid $1,500 for it. We sure HAVE come a LONG way with laptops and pricing!!! I'm happy for you. 🙂

AFA installing XP yourself; it depends on driver availability. Acer has about 10 different websites, depending on where in the world you "click" on their main website. But they do have a central FTP site. Dig for it and you'll find it (I don't remember the exact URL, else I'd tell you).

They have drivers for lots of things on their FTP that they don't advertise on the main "Help Site." You also might be able to find drivers from the part manufacturers themselves. I.E. if it uses a Broadcom wireless card you might be able to get XP drivers from Broadcom vs. Acer.

I'd investigate it all first-hand before buying.

thanks, i'm gonna have to look around... i really really hate Vista and thats the one thing from stopping me from buying a new laptop right now... i've been in situations with my dads new laptop for example where i HAD to use Vista because there just werent any XP drivers for some of the components... 🙁

i know HP sucks with driver support from my experience... any recommendations?

i just put xp sp3 on my dell vostro 1400. a lot of dell small business, as said earlier, can ship with xp pro now.

It is like 3x faster with xp on this thing.

btw i had to slipstream the ich8 Sata drivers onto my sp3 disk via Nlite. good luck!

hmmm thanks! 🙂
i use nlite a lot so no problem there! i just never thought i'd be buying a Dell... 😛
