Photo editing noob here. This one was taken with a smartphone, iphone 4, I think. It's a picture of my niece, just want to know if it's possible to improve. I figure cellphone pics are beyond repair/improvements but would like to know for sure, care enough about the image to invest time.

TIA

you can easily recompose the image by cropping out parts of it
i would probably crop out some of the left side as well as either some of the bottom or top (depending on if you want the dark space to contrast with the light bedspread)

you might be able to sharpen it a bit, but i wouldn't know since i'm terrible at gimp

Thank you very much! What's your paypal address?

One of the machines at work has some foto editing software. I wanted to brush up my skills anyway but will have to wait to try it at work. Software is a bit pricey. I'll try to get the original photo to work on it if my sister still has it on her phone/still has the same phone.

As a suggestion for photos, get closer to your subject.

This is a perfect example of where getting closer would be better - the background isn't interesting - the baby is.

To add to Mike's idea, for passing on to your sister for future pictures of this cute lady : kids are small in size, and taking pictures from above makes them smaller. She should take baby pictures from lower, as close to the kid's level as possible. I can imagine how great this shot would have been if baby had been looking into the camera when it was held near her left foot, in line of her sight.

As for the current picture, you could try cropping out most of her surroundings, to make it appear a closer shot. But you'll lose some sharpness, so up to you.
