Possible to have non-raid partition on raid 0 disk?

I have a 500gb and 400gb hd. I want to make them a raid 0 array, which would make an 800gb sized array. At the same time, I want a non-raid partition for the OS and where I can put data that won't be lost in case of a raid failure. Is it possible to do this and will this lead to performance lost to the raid 0? Thanks.

If you really want you could install the OS onto a 100G partition on the 500G and then use software RAID to create a RAID0 out of partitions on the 2 disks.
