Finally buying a PC for home and bought a Linksys wireless router so that my fiancee can use her laptop in various places around the house. On our property we have a building about 300 feet from the house where I have a woodworking shop and she has her kiln, etc...for her pottery work.

We would like to be able to use the laptop out there and thought there might be a way to connect to the wireless from out there. The building is nearly a straight shot from the back of the house and sits maybe 20 feet higher than the house. There are a few trees between the house and the building but not so many as to obscure the view.

Ideas? Are we ntus for even trying? I don't know a lot about this sort of thing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could work.

Although difficult to tell without trying it first.

Key thing to keep in mind is have a few obstructions as possible and have the AP prefferable higher in the home and near a window facing the shop/building.

If that doesn't work you could mess with an antenna. If you need ultimate power pick up a Cisco 350 access point off ebay.

300 Feet would work if you Bridge with Two Directional Antennae and have a line of sight. Depending on you would like the Wireless or Wired work you might need more Wireless hardware.

The general idea is described in this page (read to the end): http://www.ezlan.net/bridging

As a frame of reference I have a 350 access point.

I can get wireless in my neighbors house, 3 houses down. Well over 100 yards.

It's a bit far, but give it a try. Nothing to lose. Could also get the linksys extender Extender
That thing hold up ok outside?

Not really for outside in the elements.

The directional antenna might work too that Jack suggests.

If you didn't already have the wireless router, I'd also suggest the 350 or even a 1200. I can say from personal experience I can get a signal (weak but usable) from our neighbors house about 250 feet away through trees and heavy underbrush to the point we can barely see their house.

And this is mainly due the 100mW output of the 350 provides,:D:beer: as oppose to the 35mW that most of the Entry Level Wireless Hardware produces.:(

Well the thing is they are getting quite cheap on eBay. Highly recommended. I mean the difference is amazing....all over the house and entire yard I get full strength 11 Mbs.

The cantenna is very good if you have total clear line of sight you can start with one cantenna at the transmitting side, and it migh be that the Shop would recieve a decent signal with the stock Anteena if you put it in a Window facing the cantenna.
