Possible to fry a mobo with too strong a psu?

I just got off the phone with an HP rep who told me that their senior techs recommend no higher than a 300w psu for their systems otherwise you risk frying the motherboard and other components. Their systems come with a Hipro 250w (12v @ 14a). Does this sound strange to anyone? Or is that really accurate? Mobo Link: ASUS P4SD-LA

I was just about to upgrade to a quality 350w psu having ordered a 6600gt, but now I'm wondering if I should scale back to a quality 300w instead.

Yeah, that sounded fishy to me and I'm not even that knowledgeable on the subject.

It gets tiring always being misled by sales reps and "technicians". I try to research all I can online, but some questions, like whether or not I can swap out the psu in an HP for a standard ATX one, you'd think I could get a straight answer from HP on...

Well I just ordered the 360w I originally planned on. Thanks for the feedback.

You could plug a PC Power&Cooling 810W PSU into a VIA EPIA-ML8000A Mini-ITX motherboard without hurting the motherboard.

The only issue I've heard of with ready-built PCs from the big companies is concerning the wiring, but that was with some Dells - the power supply connector itself was ATX, but the wire pinouts were different. A standard power supply would outright burn up parts of the motherboard, and kill itself too if it lacked short circuit protection. I don't think HP did this.

Fixed.

edit: dammit, joke already made (kinda). i should read all the way down before getting all clever on myself.

That is the funniest thing I have ever read! Do they tell their business server customer that?
I don't think you need a 400watt power supply for your 16 way Itanium server because it may damage the motherboard.
Dear God, the agony, the agony of ignorant techs.
I'm melting, I'm melti... ... ... ...

I think some people need to brush up on their basic electronics skills, like the difference between voltage, current, and power. (by some people I mean HP techs)

I am always discusted by people who call themselves "techs" and give out BS advise like this guy.

All I've been seeing lately in HPs are Bestec psus failing. I regularly replace smaller psus in them with good 400w units.

I have a rep

for "coming unglued"

when given an answer

which is suitable for composting

I'm not an EE but the rep might not have liked me when I asked for his supervisor.
