Possible to enable remote desktop through the network?

I have a server just hooked up to power and the network. It is a major hassle to add KVM cables it just for this task, so is there any other way to enable remote desktop.... remotely.

🙂

You could use a program like VNC.

To answer your question, remote desktop should work fine over a network, but you need to send an invitation which is a problem. I think something like VNC would be much better for you.

It appears that a push installation is possible although it might require some tinkering. Here is a website where the guy wrote a script to push the installation. A google search for "realvnc push install" will also turn up quite a few hits and thats where I found the site above.

Yes, if the remote registry service is enabled (which it is by default). Open regedit on your machine, go to the file menu and client on connect network registry. Type in the name of the remote machine.

Next go to that machine's HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server key. Change the value of fDenyTSConnections to 0. No reboot necessary.

Edit: This is for 2003/XP, you didn't specify what OS. If it is 2000, I don't know how to do it off the top of my head.

Windows Server 2003 usually has Terminal Server installed in Administration Mode. Have you attempted to connect via the RDP client to this server's NetBIOS name or IP?

Here you have two links with help on Remote Desktop (RDT).

Link to: Set Up Remote Desktop Web Connection with Windows XP.

Link to: How to use remote Desktop Access in Windows XP.

Or you can try this remote program (at the end of the page there is instructions for over the Internet Remote Control the principle of setting the connection might apply to RDT as well).

The default installation of Ultr@VNC is Nor Secure.

Depending on your needs.

Ultr@VNC was designed so that it is very easy to add Free Encryption Module or Open SSH to secure the Transfer.
