possible to create photo slideshow videos in HD?

Although I've never done this before, DVD photo slideshows with accompanying music and the famed Ken Burns effect (photo pans and zooms) have been around for ages. Im sure there are many ways to create such slideshows also. But the downside to that is that photo slideshows on DVD have lower resolution.

I want to create a photo slideshow video in 1920x1080, and stream it via my WD TV Live. Is this even possible? If so, what software will allow my creative juices to flow freely?

There's probably an easier way to do it but what I do is load the photos into Final Cut (or some other video editor). Pretty simple to do. Just drag out your durations and encode it at 1080p/i.
