Can this be done? We are moving out of the dark ages and doing fresh installs of XP Home on the families pc's. I am assuming the lack of NTFS capability in 98SE could make this impossible.

But, what the hell do I know.

Sure it's possible - NTFS is only for the installed system. The CD is just plain old iso9660. The site I followed seems to be down at the moment, but search the forum for "slipstream" and you should find plenty of leads.

Well, I used the link bacillus provided to give it a try. I get this error when trying to extract the SP.

Error Starting Program:
The XP-SP1.EXE file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:strstr.

When you close the error window with yellow exclamation point listed above, there is an error box with the dreaded red "X" which kindly tells me...

C:\XP-SS\XP-SP1.EXE
A device attached to the system is not functioning.

The only device I know not to be functioning is the nut behind the keyboard-

:D Ye Olde Google only lists this error in regards to "WINE" and some languages I can't interpret. However, I am feeling unusually patient this evening. Any suggestion as to what I need to try??

Thanksabunch!

That sounds like a problem you won't solve. I guess the Service Pack .exe requires some NT kernel functions, rather than just being a simple self-extracting ZIP or similar. That makes sense since it is supposed to be patching fundamental parts of an NT system. I doubt you'll be able to get around that with Win98 - not because of NTFS, but because Win98 doesn't use an NT kernel.

Thanks. Mr. Murphy rides my shoulders like a monkey. No biggie I guess. I can make a slipstream disc on the first machine I update which I can then use on the others.

Can I just run the network SP1 file I downloaded to update the first box or will I need to do the online update thing? If I can do either is there any advantage one way or the other (other than speed anyway..... the first one would be on a 28.8 dialup) :Q.

We be hillbillies from the boonies.:D

You'll need to do the Network download so you have the entire (134MB!!!) sp1 file to use for slipstreaming.

BTW - Most of the slipstreaming sites have a warning posted that you can't slipstream from anything but a WIn2000 or WinXP box. Looks like you found that out!
