what's the difference between a cdrom and dvdrom? just the laser? reason is that my laptop has only a cdrom and I could probably easily switch out the laser of one of my many dvdrom drives into this cdrom drive. would it work at that point? the dell laptop dvdroms run like $200 and I'm a fiend for experiments like this. would this work?

All you have to do is switch out the LASER, the Motors, and all of the decode logic, and you're in there.....

You get to keep the shell and the IDE interface (or USB, or Firewire......)

I did basically the same thing. I had a Chevy, and I wanted a Ferrari. All I had to do is swap out all the parts, and I had a Ferrari.....

FWIW

I couldn't put all my stuff in it....I traded all the parts back in and stayed with the Chevy. It also sucked big-time in the knee-high snow...no visibility. An no matter how hard I pushed on the accelerator, it wouldn't go, all that happened was the tires spun faster on the ice...so much for the legendary "Off-the-line" performance...sheesh....

so what youre saying is that you cant use a dvd-rom drive in knee-deep snow, and you can with a cd-rom drive, so he should stay with cd-rom?
