I have a program that attempts to get my hard drives serial number, and if it is wrong, errors. Is it possible to change that drives serial number?

So you're trying to crack the copy-protection of a program?
sounds more like it's out of warranty and needs a "newer" serial number.

or is the label missing and you just need to know ? the drive manufacturers utility will tell you that and more.

Sounds like you are trying to install an OEM piece of software that was tied to another HDD?

Essentially, yes, the program is tied to that one computer, and I want to use it on another computer.

However, I am not attempting to do anything illegal (I know this will be hard for many of you to believe but it is true). It is actually a freeware program, from the designer, who I no longer have contact with, and I have legit use to it, for THAT particular computer, I just want to use it on my other one.

If the designer took the trouble to lock it to one hard drive, it's an odd kind of "freeware."

Why can't you just get back into contact with the designer?

It's free software but highly valuable and not intended for public distribution, it was built with the intention of being a program private to a certain set of individuals, and everyone who was supposed to use it had to hand over their HDD serial # so it wont work on any other PC's.

Now I have been out of contact with the guy for like a year, don't know how to contact him, but want to upgrade my PC.

Heh, I'm trying to think of uses for such private software, but nothing legal springs to mind.

If it's some private p2p pr0n or warez ring maybe you can get in touch with one of the other members of the cabal and ask them to get you back in touch with the high priest. Of course if you were exiled from the group I guess that's not an option.

Could you change the serial # with some sort of firmware update program for the drive? Or maybe you could find the right file from the original program to hexedit or something. Doesn't sound like an easy thing to do in any case.

Move the old hard drive to the new machine. As long as it hasn't failed you ought to be okay.

hi,
if your program is looking for the volume id i can help you out. if it's the actual hardware serial number than no luck.
pm me with an e-mail address that can handle attachments if it's the vol id.
