Possible to captue DVD clips from a DVD-ROM drive?

** Is it possible to capture clips from a DVD from a DVD-ROM drive in your PC?

** If so, does any basic DV Editing software give you this capability?

** If not, I'm assuming the only way to accomplish this task is to either:

1) Use an external DVD player and a firewire card in conjunction with some software package (which?)

or

2) Burn your DVD to a File and clip from the file?

what you need is a "dvd ripper". There's at least 5 good free proggies that do that. dvdrhelp or doom9
