Yesterday I picked up a 50 pack of of 2x compusa DVD-R. I only got them because they were so extremely cheap ($20) but I was wondering if there is a way to circumvent the 2x speed and burn at 4x.

Not that I've ever heard. If there was, the media producer would just sell them as 4x so they can double the price.

yes, Roxio 6 and 7 just let you set it to what you want, and if you use "power rec" it burns at the max it can which exceeds 2x alot

sam way the first 8x drives burned 4x media at 8x

it all depend on the type of burner you have, some of which will burn them all at maximum speed and not lose quality or coaster. must be using some burning tricks that let it burn say 16x as 48x for cdr

Oh well. no big deal either way, takes 30 minutes to burn instead of 15 but I saved $20.

There's a greater chance of burning coasters if you burn out of spec...not too bad for CDR's, but DVDR's are so pricey I'd just burn at the lower speed...

cdfreaks and cdrinfo probably have tools for analysing the quality of a burn. i've seen the results of some less then perfect burns in some threads there. burning media at higher then rated speed is begging for burn errors ... well its taking a chance. unless your willing to test out the results and all that wonderful hardcore stuff;)

well once you update to the latest firmware most dvdr that is rated at 1x or 2x should be able to burn at 4x or 8x. some 24x cdr burn at 40x, 16x at 32x, some 24x at 48x,32x at 48x
its not the quality of the media but how familiar your burner is with the type of media its handling.

Yes, some drives let you do that. For example, the new Plextor DVD burner lets you burn some 4x media at 8x.
