Possible to add aftermarket SSD to laptop?

I'm looking to buy a 16" laptop, however I cannot find a combination of ssd and bluray avaliable in this size of laptop. I found that around this size is a good medium for me for size and performance and don't want to go to a 17" or down to a 15".

So then came the search to come up with nothing that allows both in the same machine. So I was thinking, is it possible to buy an aftermarket SSD drive on newegg and add it to a laptop? I see that quite a few laptop hdd's are 2.5" and sdd is the same. But I feel like I'm missing something big here and that it probably cannot happen. Any info?

The ones that will be faster than your hdd won't be cheap. The ones you might find have fast seek times and decent read speeds, but writing data won't be as fast. Writing small files will crawl compared to a hdd.

There might be value for you if you were trying to save weight or battery life, but your laptop is huge so any weight/power savings won't be noticed.

I converted my Thinkpad X40 to use ssd. It shaved 0.5 oz off the weight. It's now 2.7lbs. The ssd is faster than the 1.8" drive that it comes with, which is slow. I did it for the speed, not the weight.

You can do it - but a good cost vs. benefit analysis will tell you not to bother. The technology is in its infancy and at present is very expensive, and the current capacity is very limited.

Why are you wedded to Newegg?
