possible stupid question about nVidia drivers

When you setup a profile for 3d preferences with the nVidia drivers, does it have to remain in the "active profile" column to be used? I was changing some in-game settings in one of the games last night, and I never saw any changes, and I was wondering if the profile had to be modified, or just changed to a different one? I am thinking it needs to be modified and that even if it's not active, it still remembers each time you run the game...

Can anyone help me out with this?

I'd test but I am not at home and I can't right now... although it's been kinda bugging me and I am curious...
