Breaking news on CNN (meaning they don't have an article on it yet).

Rescue teams work for ten days to try and reach the miners and it looks like they've received a wonderful reward :( Thankfully nobody died from it (or so says the headline).

EDIT: Its actually unconfirmed whether there was a second collapse but CNN says that at least two people were injured

Sorry, but this isn't breaking news. It sucks that they died, but come on. Feel free to flame, but how many other Americans have died in the last 10 days?

This is about a second collapse so it is new news.

Yeah, people die every day on the roads in the US; whom cares what goes on in some place called iraq.

Yes, local news imho. 4 people dying should NOT be on CNN 10 days in a row.

I'm totally with TallBill on this one. I live in quiet bumfuck Iowa and there were a bunch of people that got killed by much crazier means in the last week here.
The media turns into "The Enquirer" when a mine incident or a Blond Girl Kidnapping happens.

If anything, we should put OJ in the electric chair for starting all of this news media sensationalization back in 94

It is newsworthy when multiple people die (or are thought to have possibly died) at once in a single event. The focus increases yet again when there is ambiguity of their fate surrounding it.

Why was (and still is) there sensational 9/11 coverage for years afterwards when only 2,974 people died that day? You can't go one day without hearing some reference to it on any news channel, nearly six years later, when far, far, far more of people have died from drunk drivers since then.

Proportionally this will get about as much coverage and after the fate is learned the coverage will die down. There is a slight offset to the coverage due to the unknown factor which adds to the sensational news aspect. It will take them days more to punch through (or so they say), but once the fate is known it won't last long on the news until the next story comes along.

What else would you have them show on the news, anyways?

People find it exciting because it's a "race against the clock" scenario. That's why they show it on the news.

Unfortunately it looks like at least one rescue worker has died in this second collapse.

One rescue worker was killed and eight others injured Thursday night in an apparent "seismic bump" at Utah's Crandall Canyon Mine, officials said.

I don't really care. I don't watch tv and/or the news, however manage to stay far more informed on worldly events and current affairs then most of my coworkers.

I suppose that its a little better then anything related to a celeb.

"whom" cares?

Who. It's "who" cares.

Aren't you the same guy that misused the word whom in the other thread about Chris Berman, too? Let me give you a tip: You'll be correct more often if you just use "who" all the time. I know you want to sound intelligent and all, but incorrectly using basic grammar isn't the way to do it.

You're lucky that I caught your mistake before the grammar police did, or god forbid Doctor Who. Had you called him "Doctor Whom", that man is liable to flip out and punch your f'in mouth loose.

I just read that a total of 3 rescue workers have died from the "bump" and at least 6 more are injured.

Never mind OJ, if you want to sue someone for starting sensationalism journalism on rescues, start with "Baby Jessica", the girl who fell into the well back in 87. That captured the attention of much of America for days.

Of course, this kind of reporting has gone on as long as there's been news...or at least in the modern ages. I doubt that Gutenburg spent his days & nights reporting and printing every little detail of whatever "disaster" occured...:p
