I have a 1995 dodge neon that I'm trying to sell. It was the car I drove to get through a tough time, not things are good and I have a new civic. The neon wouldn't pass emissions.

see a pic at www.details.at/1995neon

Anyways, I posted some free classified ads around the web. I got an interesting response.

My response

Hi,

I got an email stating that you have a party interested in the vehicle. I'm open to any ideas, but for a purchase coming from overseas, payment would definately have to be approved before I would let go of the car. We can use an online escrow service, such as escrow.com.

you can see pictures at http://www.details.at/1995neon

The car failed emissions in Illinois, USA. This doesn't mean the car isn't reliable. The car still runs great and drives excellent. If purchased for a territory that doesn't have as strict of emissions laws, the car would be absolutely wonderful. The only reason it failes emmissions is because a sparkplug wire went bad, and it backfired and burnt up the cat. I had it checked out by a certified emissions mechanic, and he said it just needs the new cataytic converter and o2 sensors, all which are emissions control devices.

If the car were to be shipped overseas, it wouldn't be that hard. I live very close to the mississippi river, so transportation via ship would not be a problem. I'm willing to cooperate on the shipping fees. If you pick it up for $1000, I will split the costs of shipping.

Jason

So I email the guy this

Hi,

I got an email saying you had interest in the 1995 Neon. I have pictures at www.details.at/1995neon. I will post more pictures later today.

My contact information is on the details.at/1995neon web site. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Normally, I would be asking $1500 for the car, but I need to get rid of it. I'll take $1000, but thats as low as I can go.

Thanks,

Jason

Here is his response

Thanks a lot for your mail it is highly appreciated.Yes i am still interested in the 1995 Dodge Neon
I am a private buyer like i said earlier i am based in Amsterdam the netherlands(holland). As regards shipping i have made arrangements with a shipping company in Houston ,Texas that will be on ground to do the pick up at any location of your choice. But they will have to inform you on when and where the pick up will be made. As regards payment, this is what i am going to do,i have a Customer in US who is owing me $6800 i would instruct him to make out a check to you in that amount and as soon as you clears your bank, you can let me have my balance via wire Transfer to the shipping company in houston, texas.

The reason why i am doing this is because if i decide to send payment from over here it might take a long time before it goes through, but a check sent from over there withing US would clear between 2 and 3 days.up.Although the value of the check is more than the price of the items but i think i can trust you with my balance considering the fact that i still have to trust you with the item. Pls if you
are interesetd in selling to me,i would appreciate it if you could get back to me so that we can proceed.
Pls i would need for you to provide me with your name as you would want it to appear on the check and your address and phone number so that i can have my client contact you asap.I will want you to send the balance to the shipping company in houston, texas i have made arrangements with them and as soon as they recieve an upfront from you they will contat you on when and where you want the pick up to be made but you have to be at the location where the pick up will be made so you can sign for it.

Thanks in this regard and i would be expecting to hear from you soonest. But i think i can trust you with my balance considering the fact that i still
have to trust you with what i am buying from you.
Pls if you are interesetd in selling to me,i would appreciate it if you could get baclk to me so that we can proceed. Pls i would need for you to provide me with your
name as you would want it to appear on the check and your address and phone number so that i can have my Customer contact you asap. Thansk in this regard and i would be expecting to hear from you soonest.
Regards

This same scam has been posted here before, several times.

The buyer sends a fake certified check that takes some time to clear thru your bank as fraudulent. In the meantime, they've taken off with the excess money out of your bank account.

It's a scam...pure and simple.

I am quite amazed by people wishing to purchase a beatup vehicle from the US when they can probably find something in the same condition at their location for about the same.

Question is, if it is a certified check, even if it is bad, the banking insurance should cover it. If not, I am curious as to how the bank could accept certified checks without first checking balances.

So I got another email from one of the guys

Jason,

Thanks for your mail and your concern about the nature of my business .well, the check payment is an earlier cancelled payment made by my client for the purchase of a jeep which later did not scale because the car was stolen from the sellers hence the intrest in yours, the extra amout will be for the pickup and the agent fees who will be coming to you for shipment and maintainace if any.As regards the safety of the funds which i have explained to my client and your growing concern,he says because of this he is sure you can be trustworthy.iwant you to send the the information so that by the end of the week we would have ended this transation.

Thanks and God bless
steve.

Dude, if you fall for it after all of the warnings we've given you, you deserve to lose the money.

Besides, he lists the phone country code for Ghana as 234 when that's the code for Nigeria.

Dude...IT'S A SCAM!

Lets not make this more complicated than it needs to be. Simply ask yourself:

WHY THE FVCK WOULD SOMEONE FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY BE INTERESTED IN YOUR POS?

My guess: The supposed $6800 is from a stolen id/account, and that account owner will alert the authorities and they will come after you...and of course you will have wired most of it overseas by then.

Nobody from overseas buys a 1995 neon. You're obviously being scammed. I'd simply stop emailing them; they're wasting your time.

guys, i know this is a scam. i will not sell my car to them. I have contacted the FBI, we are going to setup a phone call, and a time for someone to come pick up the car. FBI wants to see the check and anybody involved. =) They are going to trace the phone call, and then contact the authorities there.
