Possible router upgrade! Which One?

I'm currently using a Dlink DGL 4500 router which has been working great for me since I stayed on the 1.15 firmware.

However I just picked up a Razor Chimera Gaming headset, and while I like it this think totally kills wifi networks.

As seen here.

Some of the suggestions i've seen from Razor support won't work for me.

A. Move the base station from the wireless headset futher away from the router.

B. Move the router further away

C. Switch to N only and drop G. I have a few devices that won't operate in N only and this router can only do one or the other not both at the same time.

what i've been testing so far is switching Wifi channels. I was on channel 11 before the headset and it was stable but not anymore. I then switched to 9 which seemed to be more stable for about an hour then router rebooted.

I'm currently on channel 7 and it seems to be more stable but I need to test if over the course of a couple hours.

So my question to all of you is incase I cannot find a channel and I really want to use this headset what is the market for consumer grade routers now and what is at the top of the list if I decide to buy a new one.

Also will the new router deal with the interference better?

In my apartment, everything interferes with the 2.4 band. I did have an Asus RT-N66U and it was very nice. I would say no matter what you get, make sure its dual band so you can use the 5GHZ band.

Pick up an inexpensive old b/g wifi router or access point and locate it somewhere else.

The Razer Chimera is doubtless operating in the 2.4GHz range. This is unfortunately interfering with your 2.4GHz wireless network.

The best solution would probably be to shop for a Dual-Band wireless router. Jack MDS has made recommendations in other threads.

Wireless N can operate on either 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Not all Wireless N devices support 5GHz. Check to see if your laptop does. If it doesn't this Rosewill USB adapter does.

I personally have an Asus RT-N66U with Tomato. The level of configuration that the Tomato firmware offers is amazing.

If he has G devices and the base station is interfering with the 2.4GHz network, what good would a dual band router do if he can't separate it and the base station? Wouldn't it still interfere with the G network?

I do have DI-604 router sitting not being used.

Base station uses two 3.5mm cable to connect to the sound card in my desktop.

The only way to get the base station away is to buy longer 3.5 mm cables i'm already using 6 feet cables.

Or I would have to move the modem and router away from the computer just get a longer network cable when connecting it to the PC.

The headset will no doubt cause interference on the 2.4 range I think regardless of the router so I can even deal with slow speeds on the 2.4 network because I rarely use it, I however cannot deal with a router rebooting !

I do see what you getting at tho. I have a dlink access point which I can set to 2.4 while setting the DGL to 5ghz the Access point would be in the living room and out of the computer room. So this may work without even doing the router upgrade.

Can't you switch the current router to 5GHz N only, and add the DI-604 to your network (to service the G clients) by placing it somewhere away from the base station? Another room in the house would probably be best, but across the room may be sufficient and would require running only a single network patch cable.

Edit: I think we're on the same page now.

🙂

I would prefer to use the access point Dlink DAP 1360 as its much newer than the di-604 which will reboot even running 2 torrents that was the reason I replaced it with the DGL4500.

But yes were on the same page now.

If the DI-604 is junk, pick up an old Linksys WRT54G on Craigslist for 25 bucks.

No point I already have the access point here.

I bought it when I had the computer in the basement and needed more range but have since moved all the equipment upstairs it wasn't in use anymore.

Now it will be back in service tho due to razor not testing their products properly lol.

After reading some reviews on that Asus router i'm very impressed with tomato its suppose to be a killer combo, so I may grab it still next year if I feel like upgrading.
