Possible Roomate Issue

So me and 3 other guys I met here decided to go for a 4 bedroom appartment next year. We signed the lease and it's all good....until one of the kid's parents MADE him apply to be an RA next year....we figured that we could at least wait to see if he gets it and decide what to do from there....he heard back...hes an alternate, im not sure there is a worse position 😛 We want him to live with us, but like, keeping us on the line isint fair, cause the rent is expensive enough split between 4 people....i would not be willing to live with that split between 3. Im not sure what we can do, because we cant really ask someone else and be like "hey, we have an extra space...maybe" 😕

One lease, or four separate leases?
If it's one lease, did all four of you sign it?

If he has signed somewhere, then he must pay.

if his name is on the lease, he is responsible to sublease it, or pay you guys rent, depending on how the lease is written

well, we said if he got the position that we could find someone else....not that big of a deal...

Its one lease signed by all 4 of us

I had the same problem, I told the guy he had to choose beacuse we would not be left high and dry if he decided to back out. Told him to put himself in our position and look at it like that. He ended up not coming 4 a year and we had someone else there temp till he was ready to come...

It's up to him to find someone to take his place on the lease. If he doesn't come up with someone you other three can deal with, then he still owes you rent money. It sucks to be him but that's the only fair thing to do.

And where on campus is your apartment?

He either has to pay the rent whether he lives there or not, or he needs to find someone to set up a sub-lease with for his portion of the rent.

It's only December for crying out loud. There are tons of people around that haven't even considered where they're going to live next year. Try to help him out by asking friends that might want to take his place, but he is ultimately responsible for it.

Wait, by next year, do you mean next academic year? As in Fall 2006? Or as in next calendar year, so the Spring 2006 semester?

Resident Adviser. It's a terrible job... basically the hall monitor of the dorm.

plus you have to listen to your residents bitch about their inane relationships while they are totally wasted. for hours. and hours.

If he's on the lease, he's bound to the terms of the contract to which he signed. RA or no RA, he must pay. If the contract states that there is no subleasing, he will have try to break the lease -- good luck with that.

:Q

It's not terrible, assuming you don't suck at it.

I would not have wanted to be an RA in my friend's dorm. It was a common occurence every weekend for there to be puke all over halls, puke piss and sh!t all over the toilet seats, overturned garbage cans, stuff thrown out the windows in front of the dorms, stolen furniture, furniture thrown in the elevators and stair wells, and puke in the stair wells.

And that's when we didn't have huge games, Halloween, or other special events.

Thanks all. I guess free rent is good if it is expensive to stay there. BTW, since his is an alternate for the position, it is very easy for him to get himself off that list if you know what I mean.

Tell him that he needs to decide what he is going to do. You need to know now, don't wait on him.

The easiest way to get off that list is get written up for a noise complaint. Second easiest is for drinking in the dorms.
