Possible replacement of Intel 3.2 Northwood with...

I may need to replace my 3.2 Northwood CPU. In terms of readily available stock, here are a couple of choices I have:

1) 2.8 Northwood w/ 512kb of L2 cache $71.

2) 3.0E Prescott w/1mb L2 cache (ROHS ver.) $78.

A no-brainer? BTW / On an Asus P4C800-E motherboard

Ideas welcome...

Actualy, I wouldn't go with the prescott. While it has twice the cache, the cache is slower. Also prescotts put out way way more heat than northwoods. Plus until you break 3.4ghz, northwoods are faster clock for clock than prescott in most things. As long as it's an 800mhz FSB 2.8ghz northwood, I would definatly get the northwood over the prescott. Of course with that motherboard, you could even get an Asus CT-479 adaptor and overclock the crap out of a pentium-m on that board too. Thats what I am doing with my P4P800-VM, have a 1.6ghz Dothan running at 2.4ghz on stock volts, runs cool, gaming wise it is faster than the prescott @3.8ghz I had. If you do video encoding or such, it would still be better to stick with a P4 with hyperthreading.

I don't see any 800 fsb Northwoods there... and I'm having a problem trying to find out if my MB will run a 3.4 Northwood...
 
I'd check pricewatch. The 2.4 "c" series will overclock to at least 3.0, and was selling for about $70 last time I checked. I just ordered a spare 3200 socket 939 and board for $106 total. I would suggest that instead of another northwood. I had about 5 different northwoods, and the 3200 is better overall. I ordered a spare cpu/board to use with all the ddram and agp cards I've accumulated in the last 3 years. I don't want to get ddr2 anytime soon.
 
I've run through the gamut on socket-478 processors, but I started with the 2.4C -- a Northwood.

It may be the case -- as someone above said -- that the 1MB L2 cache of the Prescott is "slower" -- but in my opinion, the Prescott is more "scalable" than the Northwood if over-clocked. The caveat is that much of the OC'ing has to come from the front-side bus, and the entire combination benefits from very "elastic" memory that can be pushed toward DDR500 with the lowest latencies possible.

Again IMHO -- with fast memory, the L2 cache on an over-clocked Prescott would provide an edge.

I also feel as though I broke the myth about Prescott temperatures. It is not really a myth -- my Prescott 3.2E and 3.4E both have peak thermal power of above 103W at stock settings. But I used a ThermalRight SI-120 cooler and ducted the motherboard. Generally, on a day with 75F+ room ambients, the load temperature on the Prescott peaks out at 43C or around 110F. This is much lower than what some have reported in midtower cases and less thought toward efficient and effective cooling. Also, I used a ThermalRight heatpipe cooler on the Northbridge.

My mobo is the P4P800 SE -- the Springdale counterpart to your i875 Canterwood P4C800. I only heard that the voltage regulators of the P4C800 are better than those of the P4P800, but the family now has two of the P4P800's -- one running a Northwood 3.0C at 3.6Ghz and DDR480 -- the other with a Prescott over-clocked 10% from 3.4 to 3.7Ghz. In the the Prescott system, I used OCZ Platinum EL DDR400 revision 1 dual channel kit -- 1GB. I can over-clock the FSB to 872 Mhz easily with VCORE set under the Intel spec, the VDIMM at rock-bottom of 2.6V for the Platinums. The Platinums will scale stablely to above DDR450 by bumping up the VDIMM to 2.75V and latencies around 2, 3, 2, 6 -- and will go up to DDR500 with looser latencies.

HEre's the kicker -- the Platinums will maintain the stock latencies of 2,3,2,5 up to around DDR440 and VDIMM of 2.6 or 2.65V. At the peak setting with those latencies, the memory bandwidth leaves behind a pair of Platinum XTC DDR500 modules at 3,3,3,8 -- with the FSB clocked to provide DDR500.

I previously had the system OC'd with a 3.2E processor to only 3.5Ghz but at an FSB of 1000 and the memory (of course) at DDR500 -- the XTC modules. That -- too -was fast, but the memory bandwidth didn't compare to the Platinum DDR400's at the speed I mentioned.

Personally, I agree that the Northwood over-clocks well, but I'm convinced that with some over-clocking, the right memory and the right cooling, the Prescott's double-sized cache is an advantage.
 
just overclock your 3.2ghz...I have a 3.06ghz Northwood and it happily runs at 3.45ghz with stock cooling and stock voltage....it's pretty fast for a P4, according to Sisoft SANDRA it benches faster than a 3.6ghz Prescott.
 
Actually I have a better idea for you. You want fast and cool. Since you have a nice P4C800 E, get a CT-479 and a P-M 730 . OC the 730 to 2.6-2.7 GHz or even 2.8GHz (It takes a bit more to reach 2.8GHz) and you will be set. The Pentium M is going to be miles ahead of a Presshot or Northwood. Did I mention it takes a P4 @ 4.5 + GHz to beat a P-M @ 2.7 GHz......

I have a 3.06 NW system as well, it rocks at 3.6 at default voltage. Since it's a 533MHz fsb CPU, they overclock like crazy on the more modern 800MHz fsb systems....benchmarks are off the charts compared to any other (stock) P4 CPU too.
 
Reason I might need a new CPU is that I had a power supply failure about 3 weeks ago. It was warranty-replaced. But, I am still getting lots of "BSOD's" and lock-ups. PS I guess must have damaged memory, cpu, MB, or something...

MB I checked for bulging, bent, or leaking caps... all is fine there. Prime95 found some memory errors, so putting in other memory to see if that solves it.

If there IS something wrong w/ the MB, could it damage the new memory I am about to put in??

Looks more like memory errors than CPU. IRQL errors tend to be driver or memory related. The page faults are also usualy memory related. The nv4_disp and nv4 minisys are both related to video card drivers. The CPU is usualy the last culprit when it comes to BSOD's, they rarely rarely go bad, especialy if they are just running at stock speeds. It's more likely the power supply damaged either the memory, or the motherboard. Run memtest86+ to test your memory. You can download it from http://www.memtest.org/
 
Did run memtest86+... one error...

Should I be concerned with possibly damaged MB doing harm to the new memory I'm about to put in?

Also, could part of problem be conflicting device drivers as well?

What would you do?
 
If you've tested the memory, I'd try a new motherboard before ordering a different cpu. I've never had a cpu go bad due to a power surge or lightning.
 
Wow...

It was the memory... ran "memory86+" again, and "Prime95"...memory errors...

Ordered and installed new 2 gig of OCZ 3200... VOILA !! All set... no lockups in 2 days...comp is a hot-rod again...

I honestly thought it was the cpu...one reason is because my fan on the heat sink is blowing the wrong way..."onto" the cpu, not sucking air away from it...and the heat sink fins were loaded with dust ... I should reverse this, right?

But, it was the memory...


Haven't had to do much trouble-shooting over the years(lucky)... so this process was a good "lesson-learned"...

Actualy most heatsinks are designed to have the fan blow air down in to it rather than sucking the air away.
 
Gee, a lot of folks think it's the other way around...thx for that.

It was incredible how thick the dust was on the fins of the Zallman...almost solid...

Yes, down onto the heatsink (very few exceptions to this rule). Make sure you clean off all that dust: blow off with canned air, or rinse & dry (with the heatsink fully removed!).
 
I'm in a similar boat.. i have a 2.8 server and want to put the fastest chip..

For general file sharing and VM running.. I dont need any of advance features of prescott right ?

is 3.2 the fastest northwood available ?
 
Go to www.pricewatch and search for RK80532PG096512 - this is the OEM version of Northwood 3.4 GHz.

Is you NW 2.8 GHz dead? Would advise staying with NW 2.8 GHz if the additional power is not an absolute must. BTW, what motherboard are you using?
 
I think the one i got in there is a prescott 2.8.. ill need to go home and check.. its still running, still has 1 year warranty left.. its a 1u dell server.. i just want to run more VM on it.. since older processor often are cheaper, i figure ill just pop 2 in ...

Can't fit adapters in a 1u server..
