Possible problem with WRT54GS

Here?s the problem, I run a FTP server and my whole network (5 computers) behind a WRT54GS. I have the FTP server running as the DMZ server and a Zone Alarm firewall installed on it. The other network is behind the NAT firewall on the router. Ever since switching to the WRT54GS, people have problems logging onto the FTP server. Only one client will work that we can find (flashfxp) but I don't want everyone buying new FTP clients since I'm the one charging for the FTP storage. I have thought about buying another simple router to split the internet connection between the WRT54GS and the FTP server however I don't want to add one more link into the connection chain. I can connect the server directly to the internet and there are no problems but on the WRT54GS, people have a problem with no connection, lists timing out, incomplete lists, and so forth. Any ideas or directions I should take?

what I would do:

uninstall zonealarm and disable windows firewall if it is enabled

take the computer off the DMZ

forward only ports 21-22 to the computer hosting the server

try to connect

also, have the clients try turning on/off passive mode and see if it makes a difference

Thats how I started long ago. The problem is that ports 21/22 can be unblocked but the lists or queues are sent out on random high ports with no way of directing them. A NAT firewall blocks these and incoming lists requests. Ports 21/22 are for data movement only from what I have gathered.
