possible power supply problem with new rig

put together my new rig a couple days ago. finally after downloading ALL the latest drivers for everything on my system it was time to get my game on.

when i did i noticed several square blocks of pixels of the same color whenever i played any game such as halo, riddick, etc. and when i run 3dmark03 (starting on battle of proxycon). for example, on blood gulch in halo all the pixels blocks would be blue. in the opening level of riddick and the battle of proxycon all the blocks are black.

oddly, this does not occur in half life 2, far cry or ut2004.

odder still, sometimes it doesn't come up in halo or 3dmark03. it always comes up in riddick.

i went into audio settings and turned everything WAY down - still didn't help - pixelated strips were still there. otherwise, everything is fine when i'm not gaming.

do you think my thermaltake 480w psu could be the problem? it only has the 20 pin atx connector, while my asus a8n-sli deluxe motherboard has the 24 pin atx connector. i did purchase the 20 pin - 24 pin adaptor cable but i've heard different opinions on that (even that it may hurt system performance). the specs on my psu are:

Dual +12V: No
Efficiency: > 65%
Fans: 2
Hold-up Time: 16ms min.
Input Current: 8A
Input Frequency Range: 47 - 63Hz
Input Voltage: 100 - 240V
Over Voltage Protection: YES
PFC: No
Power Good Signal: 100-500ms

could the problem be my power supply? could these artifacts be the result of a heavy power load on my system? or do you think my video card is the problem? why else would these pixealated lines appear in my games?

i just bought the video card, so i can rma it. the psu is from a previous build but i'm more than happy to buy a new one if you think it will help. any recommendations are more than welcome.

any and all help is greatly appreciated.

If you are only getting pixelation while gaming, then definitely it is a power or heat issue.

The spec on the Thermaltake are a bit lite on the +12v side.
It has a 18a rating. With your CPU and PCI-e you would ideally need something rated
@20-25a for the +12v (alot of PSU specs list +12v1, 2, 3, which can be added together).

What are your CPU and Case temps?

according to asus probe, temps under load are 45c for mobo and 46c for cpu. idle are 40c for mobo and 36c for cpu. psu numbers are:
12v 11.9
+5v 4.9
+3.3v 3.3
VCore 1.3

The temps look fine.

It still can be either as eVGA elected not to put heatsinks on the vram
and does not include an external power source (meaning that most likely
the card is using the Max (75W) draw from the PCIe slot).

Have you checked the EVENT Log for any clues? (possible driver issue)

Did you update\patch Riddick? There were a lot of issues fixed after its release.
Halo also has had multiple patches and updates released.

how would i check the event log? what should i look for?

yes, i've downloaded the latest patches for everything, including riddick and halo. riddick always has the problem; halo, as most other games, only has it occasinally.

To check the EVENT LOG, go to:

START \ SETTINGS \ CONTROL PANEL \ ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS
then double-click 'EVENT VIEWER'
(or START \ RUN and type: eventvwr.msc)

Check both "Applications" and "System"

Look for 'ERRORS' or 'WARNING(s)'
