I don't see why not, unless they aren't good enough to go toe to toe with the Q9650 and Q9550.

Same pricing and Core i7... methinks AMD won't do so hot this round if this pricing translates directly into the US.

Prices are dynamic, they will adjust as they always do.

Also this is being discussed in another thread but it is off-topic in that thread and really should be discussed here. So I will quote myself from the other thread:

Don't discount the fact that initial volume of Phenom II will be low as AMD will still be in the early stages of ramping 45nm production.

So while the initial Phenom II prices may place it at a non-competitive price/performance ratio relative to Yorkfield or Bloomfield, the fact that the Phenom II supply will be less than infinite could very well mean that AMD will still sell all the Phenom II's they can push out the door at those prices until their volume ramps thru Q1 and into Q2.

Supply curve shifts

Do you think the Phenom IIs will be supported by most motherboards out now? Would I need to get a new board since mine supports most Phenoms?

Also, if performance is up to par, then AMD should be able to charge what they are worth but time will tell that.

Your board if I am not mistaken is the first AM2 motherboard, now if I am not mistaken, and someone correct me if I am wrong, but the new Phenoms will only be supported on the AM2+ boards. I think......

You'll be able to run the Phenom 2 on any AM2/AM2+ motherboard provided the BIOS supports it. Odds are if your motherboard supports a current Phenom X3/X4 (which are AM2+, but run on AM2 boards simply at a lower HT1.0 speed), then your board will likely run a Phenom 2 (again, at a lower HT1.0 speed). The 920 and 940 will be AM2+, but the later ones will be AM3, which are going to be DDR3 - hence not run on an AM2 board.

I would like to make a few corrections about AM3 Phenoms. AM3 Phenom will run on both Am2+ & Am3 motherboards , but the first AM2+ Phenoms being released will not run on AM3 motherboards.

That's what I heard as well. Since the size of the DDR2 memory controller was pretty small, they decided to just leave it in there on the new DDR3 Phenom 2's. So the new chips will be backward compatible with AM2+ boards, but old chips won't be compatible with AM3 boards (since they can't handle DDR3 memory).

With such a short timeline between AM2+ release and AM3 release of Phenom II...are they really two different chips or are we looking at a situation where the initial AM2+ chips have all the circuits they need to be AM3 chips but AMD isn't turning that part of the chip on for a while yet? Maybe validation isn't complete or they need a new stepping to fix some DDR3 performance crippling bug?

I believe it's the latter....not turning DDR3 compatibiliy on as yet. I read some AMD on-line documentation on Barcelona months ago which indicated both DDR2 and DDR3 compatibility. That obviously was never turned on as AMD DDR3 boards haven't materialized. I also recall seeing pictures of the pin-out side of both DDR2 and DDR3 Denebs on some website a while back. One had 6 missing pins instead of 4 missing on the second.....don't remember which was which. The upshot is...yeah, AMD has had DDR3 compatibility in its CPUs for some time, but M/B chipsets....maybe not.

Besides immature DDR3 controllers, it could also be power issues since DDR3 are electrically different from DDR2. Perhaps they need to sort those out before we see the first AM3. Speaking of which still haven't seen any prototype AM3 boards from top motherboard makers.

Sounds reasonable and logical. Could be that they want to release these chips as soon as possible, but the MB's and Qual tests for DDR3 won't be complete for a few months, so they just disable that feature until it is done but sell the chips for DDR2 systems in the meantime.

Processor could be the same price as i7 and still be much cheaper with the AM2+ and ddr2 backing it up. According to benchmarks in other thread, looks about on par with i7 for gaming fps.

I won't bother upgrading if the prices is the same as i7. I was hoping the motherboard+CPU price would be less than a q9550 so that Intel would have to push prices down.
