Possible performance with a 6770 in BF3?

While the rest of the world of BF3 is mostly enjoying quad core/6950/gtx560ti goodness in BF3 a budget gamer has a question.:)

System specs

e8200 soon to be oced
4gb ddr2 800mhzs

Everyone knows the game demands a quad and i will prob be going ivy bridge/28nm gpu soon but how would a radeon 6770 stack up with a oced e8200 for the time being?

Another post in another forum a member claimed 60% gpu usage with a gtx460 with a oced e8400 but i wonder if a gtx460 would be a waste over a 6770?

Edit:Maybe a 6770 will be used to its full potential with a dual core?

Sure you won't have extreme performances with your rig, even though it is still decent +1 for many other games but for BF3 you'll probably won't go over medium details.

As for your 6770 being fully used, I think it'll be but OCing your e8200 is certainly not a bad idea.

But before going further with assumptions, what resolution are you gaming on and whats your budget for your next graphics card?

Techspot had beta numbers that I have found to be very representative of the actual game: http://www.techspot.com/review/448-battlefield-3-beta-performance/page7.html

A dual-core CPU can actually support up to 40fps at 1920x1200, which is more than either the GTX460 or HD5770 could manage to provide. So the GTX460 wouldn't be "wasted" money. When people are talking about >$200 cards (and thus greater than 40fps), then yes, the money would be wasted on a dual-core system.

My concern is over pricing of the GTX460 - it's awfully close to the HD6870 now, and at that price, the 6870 is superior.

Gaming resolution is 1600x1200.

Would simply love medium all around at that resolution.

Looks like a 6770 won't cut it but how well will a gtx460?

This card and cpu will hold me over till March when i dump it for ivy/28nm:thumbsup:

Anyone know how power consumption is compared to a old 8800gts 512mb?

Wanna give this card also to a friend for her bday in march who's sitting on my old 8800gts and a x2 555 which is giving a god awful 1024x768 low BF3 experience.

Why not go with a HD 6850, they sell for cheap!

$125 after rebate + Dirt 3 coupon
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102908

Since the card will be a gift soon enough it will be have to nvidia.

Friends last good experience with a ati card was a 9700 pro and when i gave her the 8800gts it was her saving grace cause she had some over ati card in there giving her all kinds of hell and driver issues.

So not gonna try and win her over on driver stability and that 8800gts has given her zero issues over the last 3 years and wanna keep her happy. :)

Give her the 6850 and then invite her to a nice restaurant and spend the evening with her, she'll be happy enough and enjoy even more the AMD card :p

happy medium

I was just playing the first single player level of BF3 at high settings, no aa, no motion blur @ 1600x1200 with my old 5750 @ 5770 speeds and it was running just fine.
A 6770 will run the game at med settings @ 1600x1200 if you had a quad core cpu.

Maybe i'll go with a 6770 then idk what settings it could stack up against a e8200.

Could pop in a used q5500 perhaps if performance is that bad off in a couple weeks or try and suck it up for a few months till i could rebuild a complete ivy set up.

My friend only plays the call of duty games ,counter strike, medal of honor allied assault bc2 and now BF3 and only at 1440x900 so a 6770 should be plenty for me for now and her later:)

Isn't the 6770 mostly a 5770? I have a 5770, 1920x1200 on auto which is high, no aa, and 16xaf. I get between 25 and maybe 50, but generally in the 30's. It varies a bit depending on location, but the swings aren't very significant. I do have a core i5 though.

I play the game a lot on my 5750 that is OC'ed. It certainly has frame drop even at lowest settings @1080. But at 720P, you can crank up a lot of settings.

But if I was going to buy a new card for BF3 (and I am actually) it would be a 6870 at minimum. I am getting a 6950 unless 7K cards come out in December.

Your CPU is going to hurt you the most. Dual cores do ok, but are under full load just about all the time.

I will just go with a gtx460 then for 1600x1200 .

If performance hampers this card that bad then attempt to find a used q5500 or get a h61,4gb of ddr3 and a i3 2100.

Got xmas shopping to do soon so might be able to squeeze $200 into a hold me over cpu or cheap platform.

Don't wanna invest into a 2500k even if i had the cash i'm interested basically into a ivy set up as its about here .

Seen conflicting evidence of a i3 2100 being better then a x4 955 and vice versa.

New Tom's article suggests dual-cores aren't as bad as some of us thought they'd be, but they are testing on very new dual-cores with hyper-threading: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-13.html

Short story, you'll get sufficient performance from the e8200 to see some advantage from the GTX460 over a 5770.

Edit: Hot off the presses, more confirmation that you can play the game with a dual-core without significant problems (although you'll be maxed out): http://www.techspot.com/review/458-battlefield-3-performance/page7.html

That was a excellent article you should post that with a thread .

Best article yet and i find those cpu benchmarks at 1680x1050 confusing with a i3 2105 outdoing a 2600k?

Second article showing how well a i3 holds right up to a 2600k which is good news.

Would have been great if they posted a e8400 and q6600 in there to for those sitting on those past popular chips for comparison .

Great - glad to hear this was helpful, but I actually stole these links from other threads, so I don't think I ought to start a new one just to repost them!

Well till that article came out everyone was pushing for 2500k cpus for one single game being this one..now we have confirmation you only need a $135 i3 2100 to get somewhere.

I don't think alot of people multitask that much as they game as they want maximum performance myself included so as a pure gaming machine a i3 2100 sets the limit:)

Thanks for posting that article:)

This game doesn't require a quad core like we first thought. Its actually pretty well optimized for a dual core unlike Bad company 2.

Your E8200 is equal if not better than the X2 560 at a similar clock. Just aim for 3.3 Ghz - 3.6 Ghz

Yeah think i remember this DFI Lanparty x48 running the chip up to 1600fsb with stock voltage forgot what the clockspeed ended up being.

Memory is gskill 800mhzs and since i never found a review for this motherboard, who knows what it can do .

Bit rusty with with lga775 overclocking cause my now deceased 2500k system spoiled me with the 4.3ghzs auto oc:p

Edit:appears to be a dark edition with the copper heatsinks
