I was thinking about stopping by macy's but I keep hearing that they just double the price and then say take 50% off. Is this true. I'm sure the women might be able to help me out and tell me if there are actually any good annual july 4th sales. thanks

From the sounds of it, you want to buy cheaply. DON'T. Cheap suits are easy to spot and reflect on the wearer. They also wear out quickly, and you end up spending as much on replacing them as you would at first buying a nice one.

Best place to buy a suit? Off 5th, Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet. However, it's unlikely you have one of those near you (maybe?), and shopping at Saks is out of the question. I've had good luck at department stores when they have their major sales -- a good price to go on is about $300/suit, whether before or after discount. I spent $250 on one (Saks regular price was $700) and $300 on another (regular Macy's price was $450, I think). ONLY BUY WOOL. :)

Like I said, you can buy 6 suits for $300 or one good one. You'll look like absolute crap with the six suits (my roommate in law school did that -- man, those were awful). You'll also blow the bank on two or three good ones, but you're making an investment which WILL pay off. If the first impression that you make is that you don't fit the part, then you won't be given the chance to prove otherwise. That one $300 suit will last for years with proper care while the cheap ones will probably wear out in a year or two.

Your choice. :)

Nordstroms has very good suits at a somewhat premium price. I think you just missed their semi-annual Men's sale. Mens' Wearhouse has decent quality suits at decent prices.

I second Mens wearhouse. Much cheaper and just as good as the department stores.

If you wanna avoid the men's warehouse-type suits, and live in a large city, another option might be to look for a good used men's clothing store. Here in Columbus for example, we have three such shops that specialize in nothing but suits. I buy a lot of my suits this way and have copped some superb deals on top-of-the-line (Armani, Boss, Hart Shaffner Marx, Cricketeer, etc.) threads. You need to be a saavy shopper and know your suits (and signs of good quality, as well as signs of proper care), although sometimes it's a no-brainer - one shop I go to carries nothing but Armani and 'Mani. Sizing is often hit or miss - if you wear a common size, then selection will be good, but nearly every suit gets altered for its owner, so don't forget to take that in to account. If you are leary of buying used clothes, I can understand. I was until I started buying and found out where most of these suits come from (Drs., lawyers, etc., and many have been worn only a few times at most). At one shop where I'm a regular, they now will take my suits in trade. A few times I've made money, or broken even at worst, on suits that I exchanged for newer ones.

thx anyone want to point me in the direction of some links to determine what is good quality and what isn't. what to look for etc. I'm an idiot in the fashion dept. still stuck in the college shorts/t-shirt sandals attire (boy do I miss school, didn't think I'd ever say that). :)
