I've been out of the loop for a while as far as computer parts go. However, this summer I'll be making some extra money and I would like to put together a new computer with that extra money. As of now, I'm going to say that my budget is around $900 (w/o shipping and tax). Below I've assembled a parts list to the best of my ability. Please add and comment to the list if you can.

Case: I already have one
Power Supply: Antec TruePower II 550W ($85)
Motherboard: ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 ($80)
Processor: AMD Opteron 146 Venus ($211)
Memory: Patriot Signature 2GB (2x1GB) ($145)
Video Card: XFX GeForce 7800GT ($290)
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 250GB ($84)

Total: $895 USD

EDIT: Just a note that I don't really need a large hard drive, so 250GB is fine.
 
How about a 7900gt, 7800gt's are hard to find arent they and price difference is small, and a Fortron 450W PSU, which should be more than enough for what you got.
 
Agreed, a 7900GT is a good improvement over the 7800GT and is NOT shown in the price. What are you using this PC for anyway? Gaming? If you are NOT OCing, then I recommend a 3800+ X2 or something of similar speed over the opty. For RAM, you could get a little better, some Corsair XMS or OCZ Plat. PSU, as already noted above, you could go with a 450W model from Fortron, Antec, etc. Storage, make sure that you are getting a SATAI model and NOT a SATAII model as your mobo doesn't support SATAII.
 
I think it looks like a sweet setup. If you're into OC, I think it will be a great rig. That patriot 2x1GB should get up between 240-250mhz, plus whatever the opteron can do - should be good.

Agree with the folks that say the 7900GT is better if you can afford it, and the X2 3800+ is a better chip if you're not looking to OC.
 
Why not future proof it a bit and give it a dual core Opty. A 165 wouldn't be out of the questrion: in fact, it should be considered.
 
Thanks for the responses. I will be using this computer for mostly graphic design work and gaming. I usually play Oblivion, FEAR, AOE3 and Source games.

I considered going with the dual-core Opty, but I was kind of deterred by the price. Should I tune down something else and go for it?

The 7900GT sounds nice, it should run my games very nicely.
 
You could go with a Pentium D, prices are falling faster than the eye could see...

Of course, you'd need to find a different motherboard and probably DDR2 memory depending on the board. But DDR2 memory has been cheaper than DDR lately. Supposedly the Intel 900 series OC well, but I have no experience with that.
