possible network issue

Hello

for the last couple of weeks I've been getting random disconnects from the internet. I cannot reconnect to the internet from a standard modem power down, and the only way I can get access again is to restart my pc entirely.

It's very sporadic when it happens and sometimes the only way I know it has occurred is because there is a little yield sign in the taskbar. It says that a network connection cant be found or something and I cant view antyhing in the network folder.

However, I recently looked in the windows updater thing and there is an update for;

Realtek - Network - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
- Realtek Network software update released in June, 2011

Published 9/28/2011

I simply cant get more information on what this update even does after using goggle and looking around the Microsoft site. Im not sure if I should even update or even what is going on and how to fix it.

If it helps the driver version im using for the family controller is 7.37.1229.2010

any help would be nice

PC connected directly to the modem, or is there a router in between?

What IP address do you have when you can't connect?

Have you tried to release/renew your IP?

Has the NIC been giving trouble before? It may be possible that the modem is OK, but the interface controller is malfunctioning.

You could try a system restore to a point when the NIC was working, and see if that clears up any bugs present.

Connected directly into the modem, no router. The ip is the same when it can't find a network. I haven't tried to do a renew/release ip but I will when it happens again.

Another thing to add, when I try and troubleshoot the problem via the windows thing it goes through the motions and then says " Norton firewall can help resolve the issue" or some variation of that - I havent gone through with that option yet, I just wanted to point it out.

What the IP it is?

I.e., if you connect directly to a Modem (and it is Not a Modem/Router), you lose the connection it should lose the IP too.

When this happens, are the activity and connection lights still lit up on the modem?

yes, though I noticed no light blinking at the back of the computer when the Ethernet connection is plugged into. A friend of mine suggested to disable Ipv6 from the adapter, I did and it still happened regardless.

Is the cable faulty? Does it work on other devices?

What is the latest firmware for your adapter/interface controller?

Im not sure, I could try it out on my other computer, but it's just so random when I get disconnected.

Local Area Connection
Network
Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller

Driver version 7.37.1229.2010

It's worth it to note that when I do lose connnection the "Network" becomes an "Unidentified Network" and I cant do anything, thus the issue.

When you loose connection:

from a command prompt enter ipconfig /all <enter>

Post the results.
