Possible job as computer technician...

As some of you know, if I dont have a full time job by the 16th, I get kicked out of the house.

Well, a local computer shop I applied to has decided that they are getting a few people to build a system, and they are gonna see how long it takes, and how well its set up, etc...

I go do my 'test' build on the 14th. I'm gonna build and rebuild my system to shave some minutes off my building time 🙂

Who needs the 6 minute mile, when I can do the 6 minute build a computer 🙂

Wish me luck.

Don't forget to cable tie all your loose wires to make it nice and neat inside. Touch also rubber bands the floppy IDE cables to keep em short.

remember to ground yourself well.... some shops are very anal about ESD....

one other pointer... find what kind of components they are going to use...

one other thing... get a magnetic screw driver....and get used to using it... nothings worse then having to use a screwdriver that your not used to using🙁

About the grounding part...

I have never used a grounding wrist strap. I just usually ground myself on the heater thats beside where I work on my systems. Do you think they would supply the tools I need?

I always use a magnetic screw driver. Its so handy 🙂 Should I bring my own screw driver?

As for the components, the guy never said anything about what I would be working on. He just said I'd come in on thursday and build a system.

be careful which direction your floppy cable gets connected.. it sucks when it's reversed

Grounding yourself and not staying grounded does not work, you can create several K of volts just moving your arm around. It used to be just cause for dismisal at IBM for not wearing your strap.
I wouldn't worry took much about the magnetic screwdriver though.
I use a little B@D cordless, definatley speeds things up.

take your own tools..
and a static strap..
Speed is not the main criteria here, how good a system you build and how careful you are building it.

I can build 5 machines - hardware installed in about 3 hrs if I have the space, but mostly I take an hour per machine unless its something that I have done before. Prep work takes the most time than anything else.

Computer building is an art form. One should not hurry it.

I once built a computer using only a glass half full of water and a Pink Floyd eight track tape. 😉

A screw driver will do but like the man said some rubberbands and or twist ties will help (Cheap). Also a small flash light can help alot in poorly lit areas.

You could get one of those pc tool kits, might make you look a little more "professonal".

Every computer shop I've ever been in, no one uses wrist straps. Just ground yourself before starting.

Most of the pro's seem to use the cordless drivers.

Rubber bands look good for a while, but dry out and break after a short while.

Was your glass half full or half empty? 😵

Edit:
Oops..I forgot to give my little advice. Make sure you screw down everything nice and securely! Make sure you set the IDs/Master-Slave jumpers on all drives too. Set voltage and mutliplier before you put in the board too. Its sucks to have to look realllly hard for those damn jumper settings on the board. Don't let your sweat drip into the case. 😉 Take it easy, have fun while you're doing it! Let them see you enjoy it and that you want to learn and help. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!

Thier is a difference between "WBC" (it's a MI, Madison heights thing) white slavery, slam out a run of 30 clones and a Tech. who troubleshoots 25 totaly random systems a day.

heh.. Stephan where are you going to work? COmputer Avenue? Mind? Corey's computing? WHO!

heh, you may want to ask if wearing a strap is mandatory.. then again, if you DO ask that, then they might assume you don't use one..

I got my grounding strap at Radio Shack.
It was a bit short for roaming around so I had to add wire to it.

If I was going for this job I would bring nut drivers, screw drivers, needle nose plyers, a grounding strap, flashlight, soldering iron with solder etc.. zip ties, extra cables, jumpers, and anything else I could think of.

It would be better to show up with a tool kit full of unneeded stuff than to have to go without.

Its at computer avenue.

Ok guys, I was gonna get a small tool kit anyway, so I guess I'll get it before I go there.

I've just built and rebuilt my own system 3 times today just to make sure I remember each step properly 🙂 everything is neat, secure and tied up with twist ties.

I should get the job na prob... 🙂
