I have a EVGA 680i SLI motherboard with a E8400 CO stepping CPU cooled by a Zalman 9500 cooler. i have a stable overclock of 4050 MHZ @ 1.32V (after vdroop). I have read alot about the sensors sticking in these chips, however i do not have a stuck sensor. Im getting load temps of 80C + but the actual cooler base and heat pipes are cool to the touch. Doesn't make sence to me being how cool the actual HSF is. Anyone else have this issue, or have any insight. Maybe my chip just rins that hot, but it seems unlikely at 1.32V.

Thanks,

Toast

If the heat sink base is cool, that indicates that it's not picking up heat from the CPU.

Did you apply the thermal paste correctly?
Isd the HS clamped down tight?
Is the HS hitting something that is preventing it from seating properly?
If you push down on the HS (kind of gently though) does the temp change?

Yes to paste correctly, yes clamped tight, nothing i see i hitting.

I lapped it tonight to see f it made a difference, i however did not lap the zalman 9500, it had a mirror finish, however the cpu was very much not true, took a bit of work to get a mirror finish on it. gonna stress it see how it performs

Edit:

Lapping dropped 10-11C under load. but still 70C seems kinda high for the V Core im running.

Mirror finish does not mean flat. You need to make sure it is truly flat.

Also, what TJunction is your monitoring software reporting? That could be a place of error, but it is extremely possible that you are at 70C with that cooler being mediocre and if you don't have a good contact at the base. Just a warning.
