90 Model S10 - Fuel Injected 4.3L V6, 210k miles, original engine/trans, still in good shape other than this problem I'm having.
This problem seems to happen worse when it's hot outside and when the engine is slightly warm and at its worst when the engine is good and hot, but it'll happen first thing in the morning as well.
It'll start up fine, if I go to make a stop, the engine idles really low and dies, almost like it's not getting gas. When I rev it up, it runs fine. It will start back up after holding down the gas while trying to start it and will stay running as long as you've got your foot on the gas. Sometimes though you can come to a stop and it will run ok, or it will start to start sputtering and won't die if you start moving again soon after stopping.
The service engine soon light is not coming on, and it's not putting out any codes from what I've seen.
I've taken it to one shop a couple of times, and supposedly (I don't see how this is true though, I think they just don't know whats wrong and don't want to mess with it) they can't replicate the problem, though when I leave the shop and get a mile down the road it acts up again. What they did: They changed all of the vacuum tubing (it was dryrotted and I know that part was true, as I had already changed some of the tubing recently, but didn't change it all). They also cleaned the throttle body and fuel injectors. They also said they hooked it up to a computer and said it was idling good, and they couldn't find anything abnormal.
What I've done on my own: Changed spark plugs, wires, distributor cap (the distributor has a good bit of rust under the cap), rotor button, and also the fuel filter. I also put a new gas cap on, as I read on this particular model that it can cause similar problems.
I've run several different brands of gasoline in it, so I know that's not the issue, I mainly run Shell in it as they seem to be one of the few gas stations here that doesn't have ethanol in their fuel (yet).
I've wondered if it could be the fuel pump, but I'd rather have someone more experienced than me to recommend that before I take the venture in changing that out (it is the original fuel pump on the truck though, never been changed).
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm trying to avoid throwing more money into parts, and have tried all of the cheaper options, so I'm asking here
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, and if it takes me a bit to respond, please bear with me as I don't get the chance to get on here until the evening hours, but I will follow up with this post and any replies I get.
