If you preordered WinME from MS, it was garunteed to arrive by the 14th. Mine didn't even ship until the 13th and then they shipped ground at that. Call the phone number on you order tracking screen to complain and ask for a refund.

They gave me the number that was sent in the confirmation email, but I pointed out that number basically says, "We're too busy, call back." and then hangs up. I was transferred to a supervisor who issued me a FULL credit and told me to keep the upgrade when it arrived.

Bad talk MS all you want and replace all the S's with $'s, but I LOVE dealing with professionals.

Thanks for the idea ...

I preordered from buy.com in August. With DVDs, you usually receive them the day before the official release so I figured that the same might happen with WinME. It actually won't be delivered 'til Monday (!), so I called them up to see what they could do. Not free, but they refunded shipping costs (its free now anyways) and gave me a $10 credit to match their current $10 GC offer.

Never hurts to ask ...

I got mine from BuyComp and for it today in the mail for $39.95 shipped - not too bad though ;)...better be sure you have Win98 or 98SE disk lying around though, Win95 it will not take for this version...

I ordered this from Buy.com for the $39.00, then when I heard it was just the Win98 upgrade version, I canceled the order. They sent it anyway and I got it yesterday. I checked with visa and they credited me back the price, so I got it for free!

is the step-up version good for clean installs, or will it only upgrade an existing win98 installation?

Excuse me, but.... how is this a HOT DEAL? No one can take advantage of it unless it was previouslly ordered. And then, it's not a deal but a chance of luck. Why isn't this locked already?

Manly- yes you can do a fresh install, but it will ask you to provide the media with the win98/se files to prove you have it. Same as the win98 upgrade from 95 did.

I'm totally agree with Bob, this is absolutely not a HOT DEAL, this just a SCAM you're trying to encourage people into. Please lock this absolutely useless post.

Bob61,

"a chance of luck" is a superfluous instance of an unnecessary example of a redundant application of repeat use.

andrey:

Expressing your dissatisfaction with a company's unsatisfactory service, and asking them to make amends, is far from scammy. It is a great tenet of capitalism called "the customer is always right". If you fail to please your customer, you fail to retain him. Good corporations know this, and abide by this rule. It is not scammy for a consumer to seek total and complete satisfaction for his hard earned dollar.

On the other hand, packaging a bunch of freely available service packs for a broken product, and calling this package a brand new product, and selling it for $50 and upwards, sounds pretty scammy to me.

You can still get it for about $230. w/ free shipping from Staples.com

Just go to http://www.staples.com and search for Windows ME,add to cart,
then go to office supplies, buy some .79 rubberbands, use code 90524 ($20 off $50) at check out,you get free ship.
I was ready to hit the submit button but I re-thought it and decided this upgrade is not worth even $30.00.

Anybody besides me have serious problems trying a clean install with the upgrade version?
It went fine until it tried to detect hardware, and then there were like 10 blue screens in a row.
THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES!!!
I finally got a "working" install when I installed over top of 98.
