Possible hdd failure

I have an odd problem that I can not seem to figure out. I have an old computer (for the wife)

AMD 1000+ Socket A
Some old mobo
Samsung Syncmaster 763mb CRT
WD800 80gb hdd
PNY GF4 MX440 PCI
Soundblaster Audigy SE
Generic 380w PSU

The monitor (~1 year old) will blink. Sometimes itll go black for 5 seconds and then be ok. And sometimes it will simply shut down the entire PC. It also froze with game intros.

It did this even after reformats. It also did it to my brand new Samsung Syncmaster 931b LCD. So I figured it was the GPU.

I pieced together a new PC for myself and used my old PC for the wife.

AMD 2400+ Socket A
Soyo SY-KT400 DRAGON Ultra
ATI 9600 Pro AGP
Dell 400w PSU

We reused the hdd, sound card and monitor. And it STILL does it. The system is almost completely different. Since it cant be the monitor, that leaves the sound card and hdd. I tested the integrated sound and it still does it. That leaves the WD800 hdd.

Does this sound like a hdd failure? any other ideas?

Thanks!

maybe hard drive failure, but at least something wrong with the hd. its definately strange though. replace it, forget it.

I put in a new hdd today and still have the same problem. I tried my new lcd as well just to double check, but that didnt work.

This is crazy. 🙁
