Possible Hard Drive Problem Question

Lately I thought that I've been hearing my hd making noises, but I can't be sure if it is the hd or a fan, or something. My drive is an old IBM that I got w/a Micron a couple of years ago. I ran scandisk, and there were no bad sectors...but it still has me worried. Does anyone know of any hd mainainance programs that can help me check for problems, or am I just worrying about nothing.

What kind of noises? Whirring and clicking type noises are usually signs of some kind of future failure. If they're just noises that come about because of hd activity then your disk is fragmented and needs to be defragged. I had a hd die on me last week from an old Micron computer that i bought in December '96, but that one started making clicking noises the second i booted up.

The noise could also be coming from a fan somewhere. If you want to check that, unplug the hard drive and boot from a floppy and listen in and try to isolate the noise.

I know about the sounds of hd failure...I had 2 maxtors die on me in the last 6 months. It isn't a normal noise like whirring or clicking...it is hard to describe, and it doesn't do it all the time. I'd rather not try to isolate the noise...because I'm lazy. I'll try defragging, and see if that helps.

Thanx for the advice. I just ran it, and it came back with no problems. Looks like I was worried for nothing. Thanx again!
