Possible Defected CPU?

Yesterday I got all the parts for a new build. After assembling it all together, Im running into trouble. I plugged in the ATX power supply as well as the 12v into my Abit NF7. Then I plugged in the power supply cord, and the instant I hit the PSU switch, the computer recieves power. However, only the fans are spinning as well as the mobo green light. My 80gb Western Digital DOES NOT power on. I have 2 512 corsair 3200ll with LED lights, and the corsair DO NOT have light so the dimm are not powering up either. I've removed everything to the bare minimum for a POST, yet no progress.

Now, I'm thinking its my CPU that is defected. 2500+ Barton Mobile. However, has anyone here encountered this problem? I find it odd that when I hit the PSU switch, all the fans start spinning yet the HD and RAM are not powered. I also can't shut off the computer by holding the POWER button on the case. The only way to shut if off is by hitting the PSU switch. Any help is appreciated.

Here is to sum up my system: Abit NF-7, AMD 2500+ Barton-Mobile, 80gb Wester Digital, 2 512 Corsair 3200LL, thermalright si-97 HS, antec superlanboy.

Some progress...

I took everything out of the case and ran the mobo on the cardboard...and now its booting up normally...The mobo no longer turns on instanty when I switch on the PSU. Now, there is the red stand-by light. And it boots on with the power switch from the case. The RAM's leds are powering on as well...However, it still is not able to POST....

there is absolutely no video signal to the monitor. The LED's on the RAM goes through its normal light cycle green-yellow-red...but after about a few seconds, it stops at the first green LED.

Now my new issue remains...is my CPU defected? because the Motherboard seems to be working fine. the RAM functions for the few inital seconds, then it stops. So what can I do to get it to POST?

Thank You.

It's not supposed to power up when you hit the psu switch. I'd look for a short to the case somewhere.

Unless someone offers some advice, I'm going to order another CPU.

I`ll post any updates....

im not the best person to offer help but what i usually do when i have such a problem is work by process of elimination....so if u know anyone willing to lend u an AMD Processor...u might be able to try and see if it fixes the problem
