Possible dead motherboard; help/replacement suggestions needed

I've been running a Slot A Athlon on a FIC SD-11 for the past four years. This weekend, the CPU fan started making a lot of noise, so I figured I'd just replace it. I removed the CPU cartridge from the socket, unscrewed the fan from the heatsink, attached a new one, re-inserted the CPU, and powered up the system. Nothing.

The power supply fan turns on and the optical drives spin up. I can't tell if the hard drive spins up or not (it might be too quiet to hear). The CPU fan doesn't move at all (just for sanity's sake, I tried replacing the noisy fan in case my replacement was a dud -- nothing there either).

I've tried re-seating the CPU, even tried pulling the RAM and re-seating it in case I'd nudged it while replacing the CPU (but I don't think I did). I'm not getting to POST at all.

Any suggestions as to what I can try (or what the heck I did wrong)? There weren't any tools involved (except for the removal/replacement of the HSF, but that was done with the CPU cartridge out of the case) during this whole procedure, so I doubt that I shorted something out, so I'm at a complete loss as to how a simple fix could have hard crashed my system.

I'm almost resigned that I'll need a new motherboard at this point, but I'm guessing the cost of a new SD11 will probably be just about the same as the equivalent cost of a cheap XP motherboard and a new processor. Any know of some good bargains out there?

I'm saving up for parts for a new Athlon 64 system, so I'm really not looking for any crazy features or performance in the replacement; I just want something that runs until I pull the trigger on the full new system. I'm also running PC133 and would like to avoid the cost of the RAM upgrade to DDR if possible (I know I can use it when I get a new system, but my original plan was to run both boxes, so recycling RAM and avoiding two RAM purchases would be nice). I already have video/audio/Ethernet cards, so those features integrated on the motherboard aren't necessary. I'm just looking for something stable.
