A roomate of mine has a :
[*]Athlon XP 1600+ with Thermaltake V6 HSF (OEM CPU)
[*] 2 drives - cd - DVD
[*] 1 case fan
[*] Gigabyte mobo
[*] HD 30gb
[*]** Generic PSU**

At first his PC when he built it read Athlon 1Ghz. After I looked at it I removed the DVD drvie then it read Athlon XP 1600+.
That was solved. He said he would later get a 350 or great PSU.

Now back tothe present...The PC won't post! Nothing some noises litte hd noises and lights not even a beep. Could it be possible that the CPU is fried or the PSU just can't handle it anymore. Any suggestion? PLease reply and let us know. Thanks.

It could be the PS, the board could be shorting out on the chassis, or a number of other things. Check out my thread that should be entitled "When anything that could go wrong does go wrong."

John's bad computer week.

In a nutshell, my 300W Antec PS would power on my system (Athlon XP 1700) for some reason. Who knows why, it just didn't like something about my system. The system would power up (fans, HD's, etc....) but it would get no signal to monitor. My 250W Future Power PS powered it up, but I had a standoff in the wrong place under the mb so it would short out and shut the system down. I moved the standoff and everything works fine.

So, try a different PS first, then try running the mb out of the case to insure it's not shorting out on something in the case.
