Possible CPU problem

I was trying to install an e7300 and my damn butterfingers dropped it. the pins look alright, but i there looks like a shiny spot on the top corner of the processor. the top where the thermal paste lies. Is a very light ding like that a processor killer?

My computer isn't booting up. The HDD won't spin. The cpu fan spins and the monitor LED blinks. but that's it. nothing else appears on the monitor. I have the IDE cable to the HDD. I have the power cable to the hard drive plugged in.

Is all i need plugged in is the HDD, the cpu-fan and the motherboard power? I have onboard graphics.

Oh the story I can tell about "how durable" a chip can be because I have one.:) I would say that if you didn't chip it or nick it, your pretty much ok. Either it works or it doesn't. Plop it in and give it a whirl.

I doubt it did anything to it. That's why they have a protective metal covering on them. It's pretty hard to kill a socket 775 processor. Only on socket 478 processors where you can damage the pins is where i've seen damage occur usually.

You're fine. It's just a heatspreader. The actual CPU die is in the center, underneath that metal.

Is it something that would interfer with the HS? If so, try to smooth the area down. I really dont think you damaged the actual processor. Believe me, they can take some minor mishaps.

I was talking to someone earlier and he told me the processor will throttle down to like 1 MHZ if there was a heating issue.

Well there is more to it than that, but just make sure your HS is sitting flat on that chip so you wont have heating issues. ;)

Doesn't make sense that your cpu fan is spinning but your drive doesn't spin up. Will the drive spin with only the power connector plugged in? The shock of falling from a distance and hitting a hard surface could do internal damage to a cpu; all those pads on the bottom have small internal connections to the chip just like the pins used to on older processors.

I haven't built a computer in 6 years. During that time, they decided to add an extra 4 pin power connector to the motherboard. I thought it was for a small form factor power supply since it was a mini-atx board. But. yea, it's all good now. all running as it should. I think I might have a heatsink issue. One of the pegs wont go 100% down.but it's running at 25C. which is ice cold compared to what i am used to. Though, it's throttled down according to this. http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=28&threadid=2164014

But all is well.

In bold as you quoted, I would make sure this isn't an issue. You should see the pins on the back of the motherboard, if not, I would definately make sure ALL pins are in.

lol yea that 4 pin connector is actually an 8 pin connector on a lot of enthusiast boards these days as well :D. also, those heat spreaders can take a LOT of damage. and by a lot i mean people sand those down to the copper and mirror finish them flat to improve their temperatures. example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj6Amq_MGfE

Everything is ruined. Your best bet is to send it all to me. I will safely recycle it for you.
