AMD XP 2200+
volcano 7 hsf
512 ddr pc 2700
MSI KT333 Ultra2
Aopen geforce 4 ti4200
WD 7200rpm hdd
Works 430watt psu

Ok heres the deal. I was having some problems with my Soyo board, so I decided to return it and get a MSI board. Whenever I try to reformat and install XP, It will shut down my system. This has happened at two different places when booting up. 1. when hitting F11 to choose what to boot from, and 2. when I get to the menu on the XP install CD. I swapped the RAM, Video card, cd rom, no luck. But when I swapped my CPU to my old AMD 750, works like a charm. When I change the FSB to 133 on my 2200, the comp would not boot. So I can only run it at 100 FSB. AND when I looked at the processor, I saw a little 1cm x 1cm square with real tiny black squares in it on my XP 2200. Has it overheated? Note: I have never oc'ed this processor, and I have pretty good cooling in the case.

Dead CPU?

Thanks for any input.

just a note:

I also had boot up problems in my old system, where it would just hang with no video when powering up. assumed it was the mobo so i bought a new one. In both cases the system was stable once in windows. Only during boot ups i had problems.

If you mean that square you can see in the pic I believe that is the reminence of writing that was on the core. Some decal symbol or what not but I beleive that is normal...

check out anandtech's article on amd cpus has they likley have a pic associated with them...

Hmm, I guess that seems to be the norm. I also tried swapping to a smaller yet higher RPM fan, no go either.

Any other thoughts?

Is the cpu still warrantied???

ONe thought...I have never heard of any works PSU!!! This could be a power issue since the 750 would be nowhere near as taxing as the 2200+ even running at 100fsb which should be like 1333mhz....The shutdowns and reboots are classic power issues...

Well, I did swap out to a old video card, took out the sound card, unplugged my extra fans, dvd-rom and floppy drive. So I was basicly running the mobo, cpu, hdd and old video card. I was using a tweak proggy that came with my new mobo, and when I slowly upped the FSB i got to about 127 several times, then it restarted my comp. Sometimes even going from 100 to 120 it restarted.

Yes I still do have warrenty on the CPU.

Bad PSU?

Btw, the "real tiny black squares" are water marks.

Most CPU's have them.
