Hey all, This monitor is at $360 before all the discounts... I don't know which monitor to get. The Compaq/Hitachi/Viewsonic/or the KDS...

Any ideas?

In Quality Order

KDS > ViewSonic > Hitachi

No sure about Compaq

I bought ViewSonic because I think it's more reliable comparing to other models.
and it's $35 cheaper than KDS.

How much better is the KDS supposed to be than the Viewsonic?
I was comparing the two at Best Buy today and kinda like the Viewsonic a bit more. However, both were running screensavers, and the counter guy couldnt put text or anything else up on them, so I couldnt get a real prospective of each one's performance.

"KDS > Viewsonic > Hitachi"? You gotta be kidding. I would rate them like this, Hitachi = Viewsonic >> KDS. I've got a 4 year old Hitachi 19" (the original 19") and it beats the 19" Samsung I have, hands down. The only thing the Hitachi lacks is BNC.

I thought Hitachi was supposed to be pretty high end... I don't know about this monitor though. I am just like everybody else though...I want the best for my $$$$ :D

I will try to find the Hitachi on the web somewhere without pissing off my boss...(he doesn't care much for me to surf the web...hehe);)

Later,

Hitachi website

I would rate Hitachi higher than both viewsonic and kds. IN terms of Hitachi models, this 715 is 'lower' than the 771 ERGOFLAT, which I think is their top of the line 19".

My bro has had a hitachi for a couple of years and loves it.

Unlike the KDS and Viewsonic ones on Mercata, the "low-end" Hitachi CM715 is not really a truely flat screen.

Taken from Hitachi CM715 Website :

* Flat, square is an industry standard term used since 1997 indicating minimal curvature of the monitor tube. This does not mean that the monitor is completely flat. Please call Hitachi customer relations if you have further questions.

The CM771 and CM772 models seem to be flatscreens [ErgoFlat].

i would definitely rate hitachi better than both viewsonic and kds. i've had a cm753 for about 2 years now and it's one helluva nice monitor. i've compared it to my friend's trinitron and i think mine looks much sharper than his (and i don't have those anoying aperture lines either)

Let me clear my views....

If you want to do more graphic works.
Resolution,Refresh rate and Dot Pitch
are important factors.

KDS can perform 1600*1200 resolution at 85 Hz refresh rate while
others can only only perform 75 Hz at same resolution.
KDS also has .24mm Dot Pitch, which provides better
text and graphic display. HOWEVER, the quality of
this product is concerned. My friend burned his KDS within 3 months.

If you don't care about Flat Screen, you can buy Hitachi or SamSung,
which gives you average refresh rate
1600 x 1200 at 75 Hz
1280 x 1024 at 85 Hz
But Hitachi has Superfine 0.22mm horizontal/0.14mm vertical dot-pitch.
and Samsung has 0.26 mm dot pitch.

I bought ViewSonic PF790 last night to replace my 17" Viewsonic PT775.
I have used ViewSonic PT775 and GS775 for 4+ yrs. They never had problems
at all. Personally, I believe ViewSonic has better quality comparing to KDS
and it's $35 dollars cheaper. Although PF790 doesn't have very low dot pitch
on its CRT (0.25 mm center, 0.27 mm at corner), I can always work some small
graphics at center of screen since it's 19" monitor. :)

Hope my explaination will help you guys decide what monitors to buy.

I just went to best buy and circuit city to get a look at some of these monitors. All I found were the kds av195tf, viewsonic pf790, and a compaq something 940. The KDS and Viewsonic both had perfectly flat screens, and I think they're both at mercata. In my opinion, the KDS had more vibrant color, in comparisson the Viewsonic's picture looked kind of dull. The KDS also has a lot more on screen controls, even though you'll probably never use most of them. The compaq didn't even have a flat screen, and probably because of this it looked like crap to me compared to the other 2. Best Buy had the kds for $450 after MIR and Viewsonic was $479 after MIR. I think the mercata kds deal has expired for now, but hopefully it'll come back, because it is a better monitor, though not by much, than the Viewsonic.
