possibility of getting O/S to run on new/different motherboard

I have just replaced the original defective M/B on an old e-machine with a newer version of Intel M/B combo including both CPU and memory.

What are the possibilities that the O/S restore/recovery CDs that came with this e-machine can restore a workable O/S to the hard drive in light of the fact that it is now connected to a different motherboard ?

My "guess" is about slim to none. That is sort of what the writeup on the restore CD labels seems to infer. But I just want to confirm this.

And no, there was no actual full install CD that came with the e-machine and e-machine/Gateway says that they will not provide a free replacement.

Thanks.

Do you still have the HD intact with the OS from before the motherboard went bad? If so, have you tried to boot to it?

I imagine that you do want a clean install of the OS but may be forced to buy one.

I have an install of 2000 Pro from Feb 2005 that has been through about 5 different motherboards and CPUs and copied to several different HDs and still works fine. Some motherboards had Via chipsets and the present is an nVidia. I usually had to install the motherboard drivers.

I am just throwing out some food for thought.

My condolences. If you can't get your existing HDD to boot, and can't get the install CD to work, I'd suggest just
acquiring (borrow / whatever) a CD that will either install fresh or upgrade / repair the installed image on your HDD.
If you actually wanted to run some of the bundled cr*pware on the emachines CD other than the OS, that's even more
challenging. You could probably figure out how to extract the images / cabs / archives on it and make the software work
on your repaired PC, but it might be difficult indeed.
