possibility of a monitor exploding?

i was sitting hear reading through lilcam's "period" post and i heard my monitor click, which triggered a thought in my head.

im not trying to sound like jerboy, so dont make a list for me.


what are the possibilities of a monitor randomly exploding? i mean isnt it possible for a person to combust for no reason? the chances are something like 1 in a trillion billions, but the chance is there, right?

this is stupid, i know, but what could happen that would make it do that?

no joke but the monitor on my old 386 exploded!

I was just in some computer game or something and then came this realy realy realy loud BANG from the monitor and it went dead. Not sure what failed but it was fixed few days later 🙂

yeah, weird. After the realy loud bang I started to smell something realy strange and burning coming from the monitor. Hope that never happens again, scared the hell out of me :Q

I'm pretty sure its physicaly impossible. The CRT is a vacuum so if anything I think it would implode. Also I don't belive theres anything in a monitor that could explode with enough force to break the casing apart. Try smashing a monitor with a rock sometime, that glass is tougher than you'd think. I'm no physicist so I could be wrong here. They may smoke, pop, crack, snap, blur, but I'm pretty sure they can't explode.

actually glass can be very strong, you would be surprised


once i took a broken window to a junkyard and we had to break it again so it would fit in the compactor....i hit it with a steel pole about 20 times before it shattered..and im a baseball player in highschool, i was swinging that pole hard and with no results until a while later......


hehe i might go try it on an old POS monitor
