a while back I made a post about this, but I figured one of my friends installed something that had a virus on it.

but I've formated since then, and I haven't installed anything on this computer that would cause this to my knowledge. (normal programs that I've had before)

I went upstairs earlier, and came back downstairs and the windows search dialog was opened twice.. and the audio was muted, and windows media player was stopped.

it did this a couple days ago to, and I unplugged my windows mce infrared receiver.. thinking it might have been that, because the xbox remote would pause music on my laptop... thinking it could be my dad upstairs with a remote or his laptop or something.

but it just did it again, so it's not that.. any clue what's going on?

The windows search was opened twice. Was anything searched for or was it just opened? Do you have a cat? Are you absolutely sure that no one else had phyical access to your computer when you were gone?

nothing was searched for.. it happened again while I was just sitting in front of my computer.

maybe your keyboard is messed up? sometimes my mouse flys around the screen, but that is usually because of hair in the LED.

I really don't think it's the keyboard, but I can switch my keyboards out for a couple of days to see if it continues or not.. just to rule it out.

Try these antivirus scanners, since no single antivirus program sees everything: F-Secure online scanner and Microsoft OneCare online scanner. Use Internet Explorer to run the scanners, since they need ActiveX.

For the record, I did read a write-up of a malware that does something like what you described, including turning down your volume. Long shot, but you never know :)

I know it's been a while but it does sound like a keyboard issue. Sometimes I see weird issue like this and the way to stop it is to push the windows key on the keyboard a couple of times.
