Positive Review of Antec 900 Case

I posted a review of my modded Antec 900 case. Since Anandtech does not allow inline images, I posted on a different forum (hint, hint).

Here is the link.

Cool! Thanks for sharing!

Looks like you got it right, except for...

If it was me, I'd throw that sound-card away -- looks like a throwback to the 80's! 😉

Its an Audigy 2. The only thing I didn't upgrade. I'd really like a sound card that would encode computer sound into 5 channel surround sound through the digital out to feed into my receiver (not just act as a pass through for movies).

You have good eyes to see that slim little sound card and figure out anything!

The mod worked out better than expected. I want to add a fan controller because its a little louder than I want. Forgot to mention in the review that it dropped my E6600 core temp (measured with TAT) by 5C. My old case had 4x120mm (100cfm each) + 1x92mm cooling fans, too! The Antec design rocks!

rather than a review of the 900, your post seems more like a great walk through of your excellent wire-management mods 😛

regardless, that's great work! looks like you did a lot of planning to get everything secured

p.s. why such large (1kW) psu for a system that only has 4 HDD and 1 GPU?

Not to offend but the title is misleading. Thats not a review at all. Its a mod. It is a fine build mod though no doubt about that.

Thanks everybody! Sorry if I didn't post it quite right over there. I'm still a little new to the forums. I considered it a review because it gives my perspectives and opinions on the case and its ability to be modded.

Many thanks to Talcite and his post on cable management (link). It was a big inspiration!

ShockwaveVT asked abou the PSU. It is 850W, not 1000. I originally had 2 more hard disks, but found a 750G on sale and decided to put the other drives into my server. I'd also consider SLI or Crossfire in the future and having room to grow is a good thing. I really like the look of the deeeeeep Galaxy PSU in the case. I also liked the really long cables.

(BassBomb) I'm used to the dust from other modded cases. Every couple of months I blow them out. I'd rather deal with the dust than lost cooling.

(Corporate Thug) The key to the case is the HDD mod. Figuring out how to run the wires in there and still maintain a removable drive cage took some experiementing. FYI, there is no reason this couldn't work with IDEs as well, but might require some cutting of the cage.

(CalvinHobbes) What are you waiting for? Get that dremel out!

I posted some more pictures in the other forum thread.

Thanks again!

how much does an antec 900 cost? I saw one at bestbuy monday night. It look like a really nice case.

does newegg or zipzoomfly have them on their website? or any websites you guys know of that may have one?

Just wondering how bad it gets with that case as the front is very unrestrictive eh.

My Thermaltake has been a disaster for dust, but I think I need some air cleaners in my room 🙂

Pricegrabber is showing a low of $81.45 currently. Figure $100 delivered I guess. Maybe a bit less depending on where you live and any sale you might find.

Damn, awesome case mod and cable management job.
I have the Antec P-160, but if I were to get a new case today, it would be the 900.

Yeah, I'm a genius -- 138 I.Q. -- not quite genius, actually...

You ought to listen to me! 😉

I see a fan on the chipset cooler!
I found this tiny fan in my old computer parts drawer, and figured I'd put it to good use. Still don't remember what it came out of.

I have an antec900, im a bit worried about space, i intend to have 6 hard drives
Would a hard drive fit behind your vid card ?
I plan on getting a x1950

I have a Sapphire x1900xtx. A hard drive would fit fine behind it. The PCI-E power cable might be squeezed just a little (see this picture).

Remember, you can move the drive cages around. Unless you are using all 9 of the slots, you could arrange to leave that spot empty (or use something short like a fan controller there).

If you need to have a drive directly behind the video card, I'd be worried about your NEXT video card. I've read that an nVidia 8800GTX will fit in the case, but it might be too long to also have a hard disk behind it.
