positioning speakers so that you get maximum effect?

for 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound systems. My main problem is with rear speakers, how can I position them so I can still hear them? They are usually too quiet. Also, are there any configuration tools that don't eat memory?
 
Not all sound is supposed to come from the rear. The object is to be realistic. It should seem to come from where the action is. Action in front in real life only has a slight echo in the rear. The web is full of articles on speaker positioning - it is very important. This is about as good as I have seen.
