Positioning SLI video cards

I was wondering if there is any sort of convention when it comes to SLI. On my 3 slot mobo, clearly one card goes in the first slot closest to the processor. But with double wide cards, slot 2 puts the hot backside of the second card right up against the front of the first card. I always thought that to be unwise. But in my case, an ultra m923, slot 3 puts that second card hard up against the top of the case, but not, unfortunately, beneath the top mounted fan. That top back corner of the case gets really warm.

I'm about to install a pair of GTX 580's and so will be revisiting my case's interior shortly. Anyone got any theories?

thanks zz03

kinda stuck putting them side by side, there isn't a lot of space between but with good air flow in the case it usually isn't a huge issue, my 670's run between 70-80c when benching or running more intensive games, which is kinda warm for my liking but its normal.
