I posted earlier complaining about the larger problems in the world and how arguing on the internets (serious business) over the reasons why company A makes a better product than company B seems insignificant in comparison. I really should have phrased it thusly:

Why, when there are all of these awful things happening in the world, do the arguments about something so seemingly insignificant contain so much venom?

That was really the heart of my question - albeit slightly sidetracked.

So what does possess those who fight tooth and nail for AMD or NVIDIA to do that? I don't get it.

Pretty simple, people live in brand loyalty also have small worlds and in my opinion small minds.

You're right, we have a lot of worse things going on but they are less pleasant and require far more work to get involved with fixing on a personal level. It's far easier to cheer on something thats meaningless because it also means you can drop it quickly, and it requires less effort to cheer on emotionally, though that quickly builds and ends up being pointless wasted energy that produced nothing.

You are correct, the environment, human/animal rights, needless war, a flawed consumption based monetary system, the encouragement of divisions between mankind rather than a worldwide view of 1 humanity, plenty of things that are wrong but those aren't personally enjoyable unless you yourself are oppressed.
Not many of those oppressed people have time to post on anandtech so of course they have no voice, and few people really care as people are selfish.

In the end, some people are simply shills for certain companies to gain favor, a bigger dividend on their stocks, or more free goodies. It's selling yourself for a buck, not a whole lot different than that call girl from NY.
What else did you want to know? Its pretty simple really.

umm no... people own a product made by company A and dont want to feel they have wrongfully spent their money when the same product from company B is better.
