POS Seagate FreeAgent drives...

gaaaah!!!! slept at 3:30 last night copying data TO and then OFF of my brand new 750g and 320g freeagent pros. they are complete craps. no - i take that back... at least shit can be used for manure.. cannot believe seagate is continually selling these less-than-POS without a recall or something.

i received the 320g as a b-day gift and then purchased another 750g soon after (all happening last/this week). primary wanted this drive for the "seagate reliability" and the esata connection.

Surprise~ the box does not come with an esata cable (i'm seriously wondering if this is on purpose to hide the fact that their esata controllers are broken). after receiving the 320g as a gift, i've been running on usb up until yesterday. at first, it looked very cool. however, i was seeing multiple paging errors on the event viewer (i think this may be because of the sleep function... oh by the way, the drive will not wake up after falling asleep). worried that the drive may be defunct, i ran their seagate utility - came up good. okay, fine. turn off the computer for the night, and the drive's orange light still stays on. i figure that's just how it is.

last night, i got my esata cable and a new 750g seagate. first thing i do is hook up the 750 via the esata. everything looks to be good and i start transferring data on to it. and then i was like, WTF? it was SLOOOOWWWW. while the data was copying, i checked out the event viewer... and it was like paging error every 10 seconds... on top of that, there was a controller error on the drive as well. GAAAH. ran the seagate utility on the 750g - it tells me: please return your drive for RMA. serious W.T.F.

just to make sure again, i ran the drive check on the 320g - still comes up good. and then i realize all my data on the 320g are not showing up (did not realize at this point that my drive had a sleeping disorder)... serious panic mode. i finally managed to move all the files back (all the while experiencing continual write delay errors) and swapped the connections on the drives to test the esata controller on the 320g as well. the 750g now checks out fine via the usb connector but for the 320g, it tells me: your drive needs servicing, please RMA. O_O!!!

oh, and yeah, i would have never figured it out without the second drive, but when the computer turns off, the drive's light is supposed to turn off as well. also, as an added bonus, you can cook some srambled eggs and ham on the drive thanks to their heating technology.

time repackage the drives and ship em back.

cliff:
1. You're better off buying manure
2. If your finger itches to buy, chop it off
3. If your family member buys one for you, chuck it back at their face
4. If your SO buys you one, she's wanting to sabotage your pr0n collection. BEWARE
5. You can cook eggs and ham on it

I do recall trying a 750gb FreeAgent at one point and the eSata did not work at all. It would get detected by my computer, but would just hang if I tried to access it.

not sure yet. i haven't read up on reviews lately, so i guess that's the first step. i may just get an internal drive and get a casing instead.

intersting. I bought the 500GB version specifically for the esata but haven't openend the package yet.

I'm intersted to hear other users opinions.

a thread from FW

one of the users posted:

I work in tech support for a major university, we have always highly recommended Seagate drives, but these new FreeAgent drives definitely have problems. Just in the last week we have had the "Delayed write failure" issue with 2 of these drives, once this happens, you can't communicate with the hard drive. Wait for it to cool down, it works again, but soon it heats up and problem comes back.

I called Seagate tech support and a level 2 support rep confirmed that their are issues with the controller in the drive case, and it is heat related. Older Seagate external drives were great, this new design has major issues, I suggest staying away unless you want headaches.

I just got one of the 500Gb models at BB for $139. After testing I found that the e-sata speeds were no better than the USB. About 20 Mb/s.

I searched and found this link on cnet forums:

http://support.seagate.com/rig...A_Pro_eSATA_Update.zip

I carefully followed the instructions about updating the firmware and now my e-sata works MUCH better. About 40Mb/s with bursts up to about 70Mb/s.

Good luck folks!

p.s. BB also sells the hard-to-find e-sata cables.

Instead of going nuts about it, replace them at the point of purchase, and contact Seagate about the problem.

I once discovered a bad sector on a 160GB external, older Seagate drive.

The replacement arrived... smelling burned, like if it was in a fire! No damage, but smelling like smoke.

I contacted Seagate again, telling them that I was afraid of the long term consequences of smoke damage on the drive.

As a replacement, they sent me the Top of the Line (then) 750GB USB/Firewire External Drive!

Just be patient and persistent...

If they really screw up, they will make it up to you...

Much as I like Seagate drives (see my sig), this is really not one of their better products. The fact that it's apparently incompatible with Linux as well according to the INQ and Seagate's own reps is a major negative, at least for me.

The only glitch so far is that they seem to power up by themselves even when the computer is off after like 15 min.

kinda like in stand-by mode with the lights just flickering, but not like the disk access lights.

???

Anyhow....

When you change over to "Optimize for best performance" you will get full SATA 150 performance with this drive over e-SATA. Just thought you all would like to know.
