Ports being blocked

Now I have read through some of the threads and most have an issue with their company/school etc blocking ports that they need to play games etc.. But my situation is unique..
Before everyone goes 'amg illegal! no help for you!', this is not illegal because ports are being blocked on my own network by my brother, sigh..

He's the network administrator and I don't know much if at all about any of this. Now I know this will get a laugh but oh well such is the truth, I had an argument with my brother and he started criticizing my playing games.. he thinks it's a waste of time (even if it is an hour a day) so he blocked all the ports except the ones needed for browsing and such. And he is not going to budge to the people who might say 'ask him nicely'..

So without him unblocking them himself, what else can I do to play WoW and use ventrilo ? is there a way I can intercept incoming traffic from their servers that use specific ports which are blocked and redirect them through the ones that are open and do the same for outgoing ?
Basically I want to know what my options are without being the network administrator myself and without having access to the router directly..

these are the ports that i could find that are used by WoW and ventrilo..

sigh, i'm feeling sorry for and laughing at myself just reading my own post.. woe is me..

If you're not in an even keel living situation there isn't much you can do. He has all of the leverage and you can't just change which ports Blizzard uses. But honestly, WoW is so bad right now you may as well work towards a job / better job so you can have your very own place / network to manage.

If you're already splitting rent and utilities you can start giving him a reduced split since he isn't really giving you access to half.

There isn't much you can do.

You could always buy your own internet account and go from there.

When I was younger, many of my friends asked about this when they were renting rooms or roommates with another that controlled their networks. Much of the time the person running them wasn't saavy or didn't care so they got there way.

Your bro seems like he is trying to direct you to focus on your self-growth right now.

That said, I knew MANY people even back in the late 80's/early 90's that ruined their college careers over MUDs and BBS games.

I loved WoW, but once I hit level 70 it became an almost requirement I raid. I don't have 4-6+ hours to sink into a game esp in real-time on almost all of my days.

no yea i know.. he means well.. but it's the summer right now.. and work has died down (i work at a construction contracting company) a bit..
regardless though, what you're talking about is hardcore raiding during progression.. i.e. killing bosses as quick as possible.. that's not what i'm doing right now.. wow is on it's last days before a new expansion so nothing much is going on.. i just like to raid once in a while and pvp here and there.. which takes up about an hour a day at the most..

but yea that's besides the point.. my point was is there a way to bypass it..
and i was messing around just for the heck of it and i tried using a vpn, and it worked 😵.. i dunnu why or how.. i thought that it only uses a routed ip which is different from your own so it would bypass any blocks set up by ISP's.. like using hulu outside of the US.. but how is it working for my case ? if the ports are blocked, how is a vpn getting access ? i just want to know how it works because once i used it and logged in wow, it noticed a change and blocked my account.. so i had to reset my password.. i was wondering how often does it change the ip/other info ? does it do it quite often ? which would mean me resetting my password over and over.. if anyone can give me a brief layman's explanation of how it works that'd be sweet..

hmm no, I wasn't talking about that at all.

When school is out construction is really focused on in the school district. I am very busy because of that (I am a network engineer).

Long story short, no matter how prepared you are...on his network you must exit his router.

He pwn's you there.

There really isn't a way around it unless you set up your own network (hotspot, etc).

the vpn is working though..... still on 'his' network.. i can log in both wow and vent.. my problem is solved.
I just want to know the details involved with it, how is it working when the ports are blocked, what does a vpn actually do, and whether this apparent 'fix' is temporary or will it end up being blocked as well eventually. Because earlier I tried to just install vent on my laptop just to try and it worked off the bat.. then after a few hours it stopped as well.. would that happen to the vpn as well ?

The VPN is providing temporary relief by masking your real IP header with another one that directs the traffic to whatever VPN middleman you're using as an in between from you to the WoW / Vent servers. The VPN middleman then sends the data to the right ports on Blizzard's servers with their address so they can resend the info to you. On top of the latency this can add to your traffic it trips Blizzards system that looks out for compromised accounts.

Suddenly having different IP's try to access an account can flag the account as hacked. That's why this solution is more likely to cause you issues with an account ban than actually keep you playing.

You can always just play the odds. Blizzard could freeze your account, your brother might find out you're using a vpn and block your middleman, or you may well not have any issues. Who knows.

But honestly, if you're trying to bypass family that's (presumably) taking care of you to play a game that's barely alive you might want to think about why more than how. Just my 2c.
