I am planning on heading to Portland mid October to do some hiking and also check out the redwoods. Should I just fly into Portland? Or is there a better city I should start out at.

Was going to venture out and travel to different areas. I have a five day trip. Money is not really a big deal as my Poland trip is pretty much cancelled so I have extra cash to throw around. Not 1k a day money but not afraid to spend money either.

Biggest surprise so far has been the price of renting a car there. Very expensive compared to the East Coast.

Portland is the largest city in Oregon and PDX is where you'll be flying into anyway. I think you're a bit confused about the redwoods; they're in northern California...Oregon is home to the Douglas fir. If you're renting a car, take a trip up the Columbia Gorge to Hood River then south on the Hood River highway to Mt. Hood, and back to Portland on highway 26. It's a beautiful day long drive and you'll get to see a lot of the different scenery and geography that Oregon is famous for.

You could possibly fly into Seattle and drive down the coast, then steer to Portland when you cross to Astoria. And I would recommend that drive up the gorge to Mt. Hood and back to Portland (You can even do it in reverse order as well, going to Mt. Hood to Hood River then back to Portland on I-84, hitting Multnomah Falls on the way back).

Don't forget to hit up Thien Hong and order the pepper salted squid. Parking sucks, service probably sucks as much, but it's worth it just for the squid.

I enthusiastically third this suggestion! If you are going to do some hiking, there are countless beautiful places in the Gorge for that.

Crater Lake would be another great hike, but it's the opposite direction from above.
